You really don't need , or want the TSP wash if you are sanding all the cabinet surfaces ! I'd also highly recommend you prime the sanded surface first, let it dry and then sand that with very fine paper before the top coat. That will make for an even tougher surface and will make the top coat smoother eliminating soe of that orange peel.

This paint does appear viscous, which I assume is what is meant by heavy bodied. I was wondering if I was placing too little paint on the door. I'm almost certainly not loading up the foam with too much. Would too little also lead to brush marks or be more prone to brush marks than too much? Perhaps I need to practise on a waste board first to see what works best.

One final post on this topic, in case someone in the future searches and finds this topic and has the same question about BM Advance. Guy from the BM Technical Advice line did call me today and discouraged adding anything to the Advance paint except water, and he said only add the minimum amount of water absolutely needed. He also said that water should only be necessary if I was working in a very high heat type situation. Last but not least, he said that I may be having issues with the paint because it had been more than 2 hours since I stirred it. He said paint colorant starts to settle within two hours so it must be stirred frequently. That also explains why i got such a nice finish on the mirror frame, because the paint was just brought home from the paint store when I painted the mirror frame, but it had been a few days by the time I painted the door. Geesh, slapping self on the forehead, stir the paint! Thanks again everyone for your help.

Gmp3 and Lazygardens-- Thank you both very much for your help. GMP3--I'm going back and forth between wanting them to look built-in, though I think that's still my preference. I was trying to save some money by finishing them myself. I've never used a sprayer so I'd probably hire someone. Any thoughts on what that might cost (I have no idea, so even an educated guess might help). Lazygardens--If I went with the natural maple (and it is very pretty, so it wouldn't break my heart to do this), do you have any recommendations for a topcoat (oil v latex/acrylic, method of application, even a brand you like) and should I apply a sealer/primer first? I know that Minwax makes aerosol cans of its polyurethene--any opinions about those? Many thanks!
