Friday will be 28 days. Most of it has come up pretty well and I have some thin areas that I can see coming in but this 15'/2' section is especially bare for some reason.

Crap happens. Sometimes it seems random, sometimes you can trace it to a little less water, a little more sun, or a difference in amount of wind drying the seed.

There's nothing wrong with trying to start it now--while the primary seeding window is closed, minor patches can be touched up.

If that fails, you can try a third time by dormant seeding it.

With an area only 15'x2', it'll fill in pretty fast once the KBG starts to spread, and it's probably just very thin, not completely blank. Each of those sprouts will also spread.

Generally, I'd avoid those areas with pre-m, but you're certainly allowed to apply it later on if you want. Post the third mowing, it's completely safe--and you can probably sneak it a little earlier than that.

What is do wait till the monsoon is over up yalls way (Tennessee slang lol) the area that is bare... Rake it good clean up debris. Put a bag of high quality potting mix or so down work it in. Apply more seed. Then cover again with more soil. With your foot lightly press it down.. Water it in.. It will take another 3 weeks for it to grow.

you want to mix the soil and seed in well with a rake or so... Not burry it deeply.

I was under the impression (from some reading) that planting for a sprout now would likely lead to the grass dying due tongue winter. You think that'd be the case?

Dormant seed. Skip the pre-emergent for that area. You could try putting some more seed down now but don't expect much. Did you plant any seed into pots? Those could be transplanted into the area. You could get some sod for that area. If you have some germination, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Thin areas now will be thicker by spring.

Hats the thing Becky, this one area looks bare which is weird. I'm going to wait till after this rain passes and give it a good inspection. I'm ok with thins but if it's bare then I feel something was off with the soil in the area or something like that. The crabgrass sure didn't have a issue growing and it was well within reach of two sprinklers so I don't think water was the issue, grass all around it!

Go ahead. Nothing to lose. You can move pots to more protected areas if there is frost. There is less and less sunlight now, which is the other thing working against planting grass now. Keep the pots in sunny areas and keep them watered. Then you can plant a clump here and a clump there in the bare area and the KBG will spread to fill in next year. Stick a screwdriver in the bare areas to see how easily it goes in. If you hit rocks or something there could be debris under the surface.

Thanks Becky, Morph and Dark. I'll give those options a shot and see where it takes me. I'll do the following:

• inspect to see if it is truly bare or just very thin after the rain (maybe it just needed to germinate more) - looked bare to me last night, i even say a little moss.
• quick seed after that to see if anything takes
• Dormant seed over the winter at some time
• try to get some grass going indoors in pots

I don't know how well indoor pots will work, unless you are using grow lights. Put them outdoors in a sunny spot. If frost is predicted, you could move them to a sheltered spot and throw a sheet over them for the night. if you have a sunny and protected spot, that's the place to put them.

Yes. Late planting reduces winter survival and, by extension, survival the next summer. But dormant seeding will also necessitate care the following summer.

Grass indoors in pots is a great thing! If you have something like a 1020 seeding flat with a 60 or 72 mini-pot insert, you can start plugs for the lawn for next spring. At worst, you'd get about 2 plugs per square foot if you did one tray.

+1 Becky; I was thinking of my own setup with 12,000 lux of light per planting shelf. I do all my own annuals. Grass requires a great deal of light, so a southern double or bay window is about minimum illumination.

yes i was just reading on the indoor ones.....doesn't seem too feasible. If i'm going to keep them outside, then i should just straight plant them no?

Yes. The pots are just to buy time for development in conditions that are marginal. They should be planted no later than three weeks before ground freeze so they have time to root.

Here is a pic of the area that I'm concerned with. Minimal sprouts upon inspection, minimal.

Its on a slight hill. Also I have some run off sprouts growing by the road, should I try to transplant them to this area?

If you can successfully transplant, go for it. Very young sprouts don't transplant well, but it's worth a shot.

That's not an abnormal size or shape for a low sprout area, and it's going to fill in when the bluegrass spreads. That having been said, how close are you to Joaquin's current track? You may want to protect that area against erosion if you get hit.

I may throw the sprouts over there, I won't need to dig them up cause they are just growing on lose dirt or dead leaves/weeds so I can just scoop them up. I'm watching Joaquin closely.... It should be interesting

The European model has it being scooped up by the remains of Ida and funneled eastward. The American and Canadian models have it riding the East Coast. We'll see. Even the American/Canadian models have a wiggling path of probabilities over the next few days.

I'm charging everything in the house just in case, have a full tank of gas, and so on. Next up, bread, milk, and eggs. :-)
