Dinner for friends-menu
Comments (11)Make ahead lasagna is possible and wonderful. Buy a bagged salad too. Good wine and you can do a antipasto platter with meat on it for the meat eaters, and some bean dip (store bought) for the vegans. I'm kind of lazy so I would do some bakery cookies (I'd put them on a cool tray to look snazzy) or some easy peasy home made ones with decaf coffee and liqueur for dessert. You could also do make ahead eggplant parmesean if you are a real masochist. Which reminds me of one of my other favorite "for company" dinners, which is quiche with store bought crust. Easy as pie to make one with ham and one without. Serve with ratatouille and crusty bread and salad, or steamed asparagus. Skip the cheese for an appetizer and maybe do guacamole and corn chips and then the cookie platter again for dessert. Last but not least, baked ziti or penne is even easier than lasagna. Another version of lasagna is also enchiladas, which I sometimes do for company, also can be made ahead. Baked ziti can also be served as a side with a roast chicken, which is just about the easiest and most wonderful thing to make for a dinner party. Can even do it in the crockpot. I make chicken cacciatore in the crockpot and serve it with vegetarian baked ziti for my meat eating family members, and then maybe have baked squash as a side for the vegetarians, which can be done in the oven along with the chicken. These are the tried and trues....See MoreNeed help finessing Hanukkah light dinner menu
Comments (15)Update: Dad said he wanted matzoh ball soup. He has new neighbor friends he's invited to dinner, and he's been talking up the soup so he wants me to make it. I think that means I am going with chicken for the protein. I'm torn on what to make. My Moroccan chicken recipes are one with apricots which is only slightly orangeish due to being colored with paprika, and the other one is with saffron and peas and golden raisins and is yellowish. I could add some red pepper and cabbage to either recipe. But neither one calls for tomato. I am getting that mixed up with Mediterranean style chicken. Mom has a great recipe for chicken cacciatore which is flavored with mushrooms and rosemary, but my husband turned up his nose at the idea of mixing Italian style chicken with latkes. I don't know, I'm wondering the same thing. Using one of mom's recipes has some sentimental appeal though. I also have some home made plum sauce that I could use, it needs to get used up and is pretty basically sweet and sour but kind of purplish brown, not particularly pretty but again, I could add red peppers and cabbage. I will definitely make a beet salad. I have two recipes for a salad similar to the one you describe Agmass. Both are in the Moosewood Restaurant Daily Special Cookbook. I've made both. One is called Lobio and calls for red kidney beans instead of beets! The other is called "Syrian Beet Salad" and is a basic marinade. I was not too crazy about the taste and texture combination of red kidney beans and walnuts when I made the Lobio recipe, although it looks good! Has to be carrot cake for dessert. My dad is notoriously picky and that's all he would agree to....See MoreEaster Dinner - what's on the menu?
Comments (26)Tina, my father is Sardinian/Sicilian where leg of lamb is popular. I grew up eating it every year for Easter. As I’ve gotten older I don’t much care for it but I do love lamb chops! When my husband and I were discussing the menu, he suggested leg of lamb, but I told him I’d much prefer lamb chops. Fortunately he loves them so he was willing to indulge me 😬. I’m also not a fan of carrot cake but my husband and two of my kids love it. My daughter has been wanting to make it herself. I’ve given up sugar/sweets so figure I won’t be as tempted to eat dessert if she makes carrot cake! when I was growing up, ham was super popular for Easter meals among my friends. For some reason, we never had it (just the lamb!) and I have never served it either. My husband will eat it but it’s not something either of us have a huge desire to eat so we’ve never made it. I don’t hate it and would definitely eat it if someone served it to me, I just don’t think to make it....See MoreTried and true dinner menus for group of ten at lake cabin please
Comments (34)As far as drinks, since you've gotten lots of food help, my go-to is always Bobby Flay's sangria or a winter sangria using pomegranite juice. I also enjoy Ina Garten's pitcher of margaritas, and apple pie moonshine is fun and super easy to make way ahead of time (can be consumed as is or my preference is to add a splash of diet ginger ale to cut the sweetness). There are tons of recipes for that online. I just made some yesterday to serve at the holidays. A quart jar of the moonshine is also a fun gift. Edited to add we are also enjoying a cheater paloma using tequila and Fevertree Sparkling Pink Grapefruit....See MoreFunkyart
