3 Ton Vs. 4 Ton (Houston)
Comments (11)I like the fact that your dealer did a load calc--shows he cares. He's right that the 3 ton should do the job most days, but if the load calc is 100% accurate, 3 tons won't always do the job on the hottest days of the year. The output on the 3 ton setup is 35,600 btus. How much it "won't do the job" I can't tell you. Could just be talking about a few degrees warmer in the house, if you can live with that. But depending on the latent and sensible breakdowns of your calculated low, could be worse, since the capacity is derated as ambient temperatures increase. I don't think the 4 ton would short cycle, not on low stage. And with the TCONT900 thermostat and communicating system, controlling humidity should not be an issue with the 4 ton unit, since it can run longer cycles in low stage at a lower airflow. See what your contractor thinks. Explain the fact that the 3 ton system won't always be putting out 36,000 btu's....See More4 Ton vs 5 Ton; 2 stage vs 1 stage condenser
Comments (53)The furnace model number with the XR16 is an XC80. Very similar to the XV80 but communicating. Must be a mistake. TCONT803 is a fine thermostat to use with the XR16 air conditioner and furnace. Overall, I do not agree with the equipment matchups proposed with the furnaces and air conditioners. Oversized furnace on both systems, and oversized coil to achieve marginal efficiency gains on the XR16 system. I realize you may not understand all the implications of oversized equipment, but it is a big deal for comfort, efficiency and reliability. All things considered I still recommend the heat pump system. This post was edited by ryanhughes on Wed, Apr 24, 13 at 13:54...See More4 Ton IQ drive or 5 Ton 16 SEER?
Comments (5)I have owned this Maytag 23 SEER IQ Drive equipment from Nordyne (both a 3 ton & a 2 ton unit)since April 2009. I replaced two old, inefficient systems in their entirety. I paid top dollar for this high efficiency equipment and boy was I taken! Lots of service calls (more in 1 year than in the 11 years I owned the older units); high humidity inside the house (a new problem that started with the install of this equipment); noisy fans that wake me up when the units shut down at night; no improvement in energy efficiency at all (I have to keep the house 4 degrees cooler than with the old equipment to keep from sweating, due to the high humidity); equipment is sensitive to power fluctuations (computer brain flips out every time there is a switching transient from the power company and must be reset); and the list just goes on and on. I would NOT recommend purchasing this product. A Trane 2 Stage system would likely be a much better investment (note: I have never owned Trane equipment and I don't know anyone who works for Trane - it just happens to be the alternative I investigated before deciding to buy the IQ Drive.)...See MoreHelp! Price Difference Between 4 Ton and 3 Ton Carrier Infinity H
Comments (4)IâÂÂm surprised that an Infinity HP was mated with an 80% efficiency gas furnace and not an Infinity 96.6% efficiency MVB or a modulating MVC -3-stage furnace. Either of these furnaces would have the Infinity thermostat and variable speed blower, âÂÂIdeal Humidityâ etc. and probably have been able to better interface with your existing duct system by having the HP & furnace just run at lower speeds/capacities. I have not heard of an 80%AFUE Infinity gas furnace in our region (Canada). Largest capacity here is 113Mbtu @ 2000cfm for an Infinity gas furnace. Higher efficiency (96% Vs 80%) also means a smaller furnace may be installed as well as less fuel burned, lower emissions etc. In our region, Infinity HPs come in 1-ton increments and there is a substantial price differential between models.
