4 ton vs 5 ton
Comments (7)AC condensers are not sized by floor area. Using a general rule of thumb of 600 sq. foot per ton will result in over sized equipment. The AC condenser runs inefficiently if it operates in short bursts. A lot of electricity is used during the initial start up and the first several minutes as the equipment is running. The longer run times are more efficient and it will help lower the humidity. It may allow you to raise the temperature setting by a degree or two. The 4 ton unit will use less energy than the 5 ton. The run times will be longer but there should be a net savings in energy costs....See More5 ton vs 4 ton Heat Pump in Log Home
Comments (4)First of all, it is considered poor forum etiquette to start a new thread when you already have an active thread. Questions that you have not answered in earlier thread. What is the brand, model, size, and efficiency of existing propane furnace? What is its blower size rating? This is important if you are considering just adding on a heat pump with matching coil to existing furnace. If you really require a 5 ton, then this would most likely require significant ductwork modifications to handle the additional CFMs. Has any of the dealers mentioned this? Mighty important. What is your cost/gallon for propane? What is cost/KWR for electric? Tell us about existing problems with current system and location of problems? Basements at or partially below grade have low heating and cooling loads. Tell us about your average temp for both summer and winter? And extremes? What are your inside design thermostat setting for heating and cooling? How did existing 4 ton AC perform when it was working correctly as far as meeting your comfort requirements? The finished basement should have its own separate system preferred or at very least a zoning control. Any opportunity for insulation improvement/upgrade to basement area? I would want to see a separate load calculation for basement zone. Have you seen the load calcs in writing so that you can review? On the software letterhead? Post back. Comments (22)I am just being forced to buy a new a/c heat pump unit. My 1988 Carrier unit is finally decided to no longer produce cold air as the condenser is failing. I am replacing it with a 2 ton 15 seer Trane unit with a 2 ton air handler. My house is under 900 square foot and I have 6 windows and one set of french doors. The final cost for replacing the old unit and air handler with a new pad, duct work and a digital control is $4700. There is a tax rebate and since my new unit falls under $5000 I will get $1411 of a possible $1500 rebate. And our local electric company here in Lakeland, Florida will issue a $250 credit on my electric bill. posted date 5/15/2009...See MoreGeothermal 6 ton vs two 4 ton
Comments (7)Here are some numbers you can use a general guidelines. These are the approximate costs for 100,000 BTUs: Furnace @ 95% efficiency: $0.76 For the Heat pump I assumed a COP of 3.5. This will can be adjusted based on your geothermal equipment and outside temperature: Heat pump @ 10.56 cents/kWH: $0.88 Heat pump @ 9.13 cents/kWH: $0.76 Heat pump @ 5.23 cents/kWH: $0.44 Your electric rates are unusually low. Do these prices include both service and delivery? The winter design temperature for Omaha, NE is -2F. The geothermal heat pump is going to need an auxiliary heat source. If it is electric heat strips, then it is going to be more expensive than heating with gas. You could install gas furnaces as back up, but that gets to be an expensive installation. It is difficult to calculate the overall costs of the heat pump plus auxiliary heating versus just the gas furnace. For cooling the EER for the geothermal is higher than any air sourced AC. The inverter type AC condensers like the Carrier Greenspeed can achieve an EER of 16. You have to find out the EER rating of the heat pump for temperatures in the 80-95 range to do a fair comparison. The summer design temperature for your area is 92F. I suggest you get quotes for both systems. Your low electric rates make the geothermal system competitive for heating. You have to decide whether the higher initial costs are worth any potential savings....See Moreken77058
