Annie, could they have been sky lanterns? We saw them over the summer near the beach one Sat. night and we were freaked out a bit at first until we realized what they (probably?) were -- assumed they were being released at some event nearby.

I just found this pic online -- we didn't see this many, we saw maybe 15 of them floating across the sky.

I don't think so as they travelled in such a straight line, they moved rather quickly across the sky...much faster than the planes. Except for the 3 that broke off and created a triangular shape. They certainly didn't look like they were moving with the wind. Also, these are lit on the bottom and glow on top...what we saw was lit in the middle and the glow was all the way around.

Yes! Years ago my ex and I saw one in the night sky and "followed" it in our car and it was the most bizarre thing. I still don't know what it was, but it was definitely a flaming orange ball traveling at amazing speed. It was fascinating and terrifying.

Have you checked you local news to hear if anything has been reported? You could also call your local radio station. I'm sure if you saw them there were also others.

My brother always maintained I was abducted by aliens at some point in my childhood and replaced with a different model, does that count?

They looked very similar to these, only these appear to have two light sources in each ball...the ones we saw only had one in the center.

I remember the time Edwin Newman of NBC news was interviewing a woman who claimed she saw a UFO. He asked her how she could be sure it was unidentified, and she said because it had the letters U...F...O on the side!

Many years ago, while my husband, myself, and our two children, were camping with my Mom and Dad, we saw what I believe was a UFO. We were sleeping under the stars on Army cots. All of a sudden we saw a "star" moving towards us, it got bigger and bigger until it was about the size of a large beach ball in the sky - it still looked like a star. As it was moving towards us we were talking about what it could possibly be. At first, my Dad thought it was a weather balloon. Until it stopped, that is. It was as if it just stopped and hung in the sky. Then all of a sudden it started moving back up into the higher sky and then it was like it streaked very quickly higher and higher until we could no longer see it. My Dad refused to talk about it anymore and would never talk about it at any time in the future. If we started talking about it, he would just get up and leave the room. My Mom took her cues from Dad and would not talk about it, but she would not leave the room when we started talking about it. My husband and I decided it was a UFO.

I don't think aliens is a logical explanation so I don't go there. Not that I don't think they exist, because I do. I just don't think they visit our planet . . .yet.

Yes, in 80' or 1981 (?) in Michigan.
I had gone home on vacation from Florida
to see the family and the new house my mom had built out in the country. My mom
had invited my grandparents over for dinner so there were no alcoholic drinks
served (in case you think us altered). After dinner I had two and a half hours
to kill before my friends came to pick me up for a night out so I went out to
view the countryside. In the sky up over the left hand side of the roof was a
saucer shaped disk with different colored round lights with the majority being
orange. I stared at it a bit trying to figure out what it was as there was no
sound at all and it didn’t move. At that point I went in the house and had
everyone come out and take a look. I will never forget the strange look on my grandmothers’
face; it wasn’t horror but maybe something close. She quickly went in the house
and was not heard from again. My grandfather was interested like me and would
come out occasionally to see if it had moved. My mom was content on updates
from us. It didn’t move for a long time. I know at least a half an hour because
I came in to see how much longer before my friends were to come and I had two
hours to go. I went back out and the
thing moved faster than the eye could see about one and a half to two acres
across and stayed there.

Now this is the strange bit and for the record I do
not think I was abducted hahaha but when I came back in my mom started yelling
at me asking me were I had been. I thought she was off her rocker because I had
been right out the front side of the house the whole time. Mom said no you were
not; we (her and grandpa) looked for you and called. Anyway, I was freaked to
see I only had twenty minutes before my friends were due and wondered where the
last almost two hours went. True story! Maybe I fell asleep behind a tree or
under a bush? No idea because I was partially ready to go out on the town and wouldn’t
have wanted to get dirty or messed up. It was years and years after before my
mom would talk about it…reluctantly, my grandmother wouldn’t acknowledge it at
all and my grandfather was still curious as to what it was but didn’t want to
talk about it other than that. It passed into the taboo. It is still pretty
taboo as I’m risking a lot by telling this story.

Ha no to any abduction stories or memories Cindy. I can't put my finger on grandma's expression except maybe dread (?). I found this picture online and am posting it here only because it is close to what we saw. The difference is that the lights were more plentiful , were two or three times the size and went closer to the outer rim. The disk itself was dark not black but dark and the lights were multi colored. It was completely silent.

I think the silence is what gets me...we're so used to seeing objects in the sky, but they make noise. But when they're moving and they're silent, it's disconcerting.

Yes that stands out to me too. I was out in the country and it was so silent.
