FWIW, I don't have penst but put in a new bed last year where I dug out daffodils that flopped. The newly-planted artemesia and sage? fell over with the first rain and never recovered for the season, sulked, one climbing rose did well anyway. There is a large flowering tree that sucks out nutrients. Last fall, I spread a bag of compost over that bed and tucked it in generously with leaves (have to conserve my purchased mulch). A little flopping of one plant this spring, but all the others have recovered, are standing erect, and art is multiplying, only a little morning sun which could be a factor. Now I started another bed with plenty of sun where I put some meadow sage. Fell right over. There is competition with another tree but not nearly so close. So I'll compost this fall and look for them to stand up straighter next year if they survive. Apart from what the other poster said about one variety seemed to be needing staking, I'd see if you are nutrient deficient there, don't know if you amended you soil or not, but what I did may help yours next season, if it survives growing a season. I wouldn't give up on it. A little fert might help, but I don't know what would be good and you don't want to overdo that. I've got pieces of bamboo stake, maybe I'll help my new sage along with that this year. If they flop next year, I will pull them out. Maybe some weaker new plants just do that when so young, transplant shock, and hard rains from the git go like we've had here.

Frosty Morn is by far my worst flopping sedum. Sedum alboroseum 'Mediovariegatum', a tall yellow variegated sedum which I bought at the same time in Spring 04 and planted on the opposite end of the same hot southwest facing & dryish (for me) bed near the house, is much bushier and upright than Frosty Morn. The only other Sedum that I have that is nearly as bad as FM is Vera Jamison, one of the older purplish varieties which always sprawls open. Because Vera is actually a quite short sedum, it has not been as troublesome as FM which is always intruding on its neighbors & getting chopped up by the lawnmower as it lays on the grass - at least in my garden. Since I really love the variegation on Frosty Morn and built a combo around it, I have put up with the flopping, but have to admit that I have taken to chopping if off by at least a quarter with hedge clippers or pruners several times a season to make it work. Fortunately the chopped pieces grow nicely when stuck back into the ground which helps give a fuller effect to what has been a rather thin dislay for me. IME, Frosty Morn has not proved to be a very robust sedum, I suppose because of the variegation. BTW, Autumn Joy has never flopped for me in any of its several locations in my yard (usually on hills in front of shrubs or big grasses that suck up all the moisture), even though I have read of others who have had problems with AJ, so I was actually quite shocked by the poor performance of Frosty Morn. Gardening sure keeps you on your toes!! LOL. Brunosonio - I don't mean to discourage you - maybe you have better conditions for FM than I do. Best Wishes, Leslie

Thanks for all the great replies! I inherited the sedums when I bought the house 3.5 years ago, so I don't know how old they are. I have cleared out the flower beds, spaced them out, and mulched them, so they should have more room. They are in good soil, where they get a lot of late sunshine and rain. I like them as they are popular with bees and butterflies when in bloom. Just last night I was cutting Peony cages to make one really big cage for a Peony, and I may do the same for these. Or maybe devise a nice little arrangement with poles and string to hold them up off the walkway. vince

I'm sorry I forgot to come back to this with photos! I since found a plant tag buried in the dirt which says this is a Bloomstruck hydrangea. Here's what my silly hydrangea looked like around May 1: By a few weeks later it was filling out and had more that 10 buds on it, so I decided to leave it alone. From this angle it looks deceptively normal. Now the buds are getting large and heavy, and the whole thing was flopping a lot today, so I decided to stake i to give it some support. It looks a little ridiculous again! There are two main branches, and It's over 4' tall. The flowers are facing the wrong way because of how I staked it, but I'm hoping they'll turn back toward the sun. So what would you do with this? As I said above, due to some pruning, the yard is a little sunnier than it was, so maybe next year it won't have to stretch as much? It's still shady, just more dappled with an hour or so of direct sun. Thanks!
