Christmas palms

I just bought christmas palms that were tall and skinny, I realize this is because they were shaded when they were young, but now I am planting them in full sun, my question is will they change to a thicker fuller tree eventually or are they destined to be scrawny forever?

Are you in Florida? If you are growing these in the ground, are in a warm enough climate, and you give them regular feedings/water, there's no reason why they won't look like all the others growing in full sun once they get established. Old fronds might burn initially, depending on where they were grown (under shade cloth?).

problems created by improper growing conditions.. should remedy themselves.... over the years ... when the conditions become proper ... assuming proper planting and aftercare ...

but.. being a tree... you have to consider it all in tree time ... not your time ... as i said.. years.. not weeks or months ...

link below to planting guide.. though i have no idea how that all might relate to a palm ... but the parts on watering should be universal ... in the sense of finding out how water moves thru your soil .. and not just watering on some whim ...

if there is a FL forum.. or a palm forum.. you might get much better advice ...

I don't think moss will pose any problems for the palm. If there is moss (not spanish moss, but true mosses and lichens type of stuff) then the palm might be staying a little too moist so check to make sure sprinklers aren't directly hitting it. Good luck! -Alex

I know this is a stretch. And the nursery advised that the palm wouldn't last too long if it didn't have any direct sunlight. Unfortunately, there was nothing I could do to convince the other people that the plant would not strive here. We have a 12' christmas palm located in the center of our office where it receives no direct sunlight, one of the vents of the AC hits directly one side of the palm and our office has to remain with the temperature around 75-77 because of the floating wood floors in the second level. (If humidity rises to much, the floors tend to contract and can separate from the click mechanism.) This palm become an indoor plant no more than two weeks ago and I have already removed 4 brown branches from it. We already thought about taking the plant and putting it outside where it will survive, but before we make that call are there any special tips that we could try to save her inside? I water Lucy (the palm's name) about 3 times a week with based on the recommendation from the nursery. The planter does not have irrigation system.

Adonidias don't have a particularly thick trunk, they tend to be more slender. Crowded low light conditions cause palms to grow tall and skinny, which is probably what happened with yours if they are extra skinny. How skinny are yours and do you have photos you could post?

I found out what is happening to my palm trees! At this moment two of the palm trees are down to only the center being green. The rest of the leaves are brown. But one of them is healthier than ever. So I studied the root system and found out that one of the palm trees is completely choking the roots out of the other two. This is why the other palms are dying while one of them is bigger than ever. the problem is, they were planted way to closed to each other, and now that they are older the roots are thicker and the plants were fighting for root space, and one won the fight. i am just wondering, if I cut some of the roots of the other palm could I save them or end up killing the healthy, strong one? has any one has this problem with palm tree trios being too close to each other? hope someone can help!

Thank you! Yes I am in Florida, I do plan on caring for them religiously, so I will stick it out with these guys then....

Those should be wonderful addition to your pool landscape! I would space them out further from each other though. You are probably planning on doing that. Consider underplanting with variegated ginger, bromeliads, cardboard palm, crotons!
