Help plz re trash under sink, drain place, analysis-paralysis
Comments (4)Hi antss, thanks for your comment. Is this something that doesn't have to be detailed on the blueprints for the kitchen? I was thinking that I should have on the plans whether the drain is to be centered or rear located. Are you saying that's not necessary ahead of time?...See Moreputting trash in 36inch sink base: choose center or rear drain si
Comments (5)We have a center drain with an 18" trash and recycling setup underneath it. Initially thought we would need a side rear drain, but it worked! What makes it feasible is the lack of a disposal, so if you don't plan to have one, you might be able to pull it off. It really depends on whether you can fit all of the rest of your under-sink gear on one side of the sink (minus a bit in the middle for plumbing). We don't have any of those, so not sure how much space they take. If you're doing two half-depth bins side by side (on both sides of the sink) it might also be different--ours are two front-to-back so they take up 100% of the space on one side but nothing on the other....See MoreAnyone with Trash Pull Out Next to DW?
Comments (9)Thanks for all the responses. Having the last 3 houses with the DW on the left seems like second nature and obviously according to Kateskouros it might be the preferably way to go for righties. Having 2 DW would be a good way to test. As best as I could, I just mocked up the set up pulling out a 15" (not an 18") drawer next to the DW and pulled it only the equivalent of 1/2 way since I'd only need the garbage and not recycling. I found myself comfortably straddling the trash between the imaginary sink and the DW. If I didn't have the belief, I had to rinse my dishes too, it might even be preferable. Though I had to stretch a little more then if I didn't have the 18" pull out in the way, it wasn't that big a deal. The plus is that I wouldn't have to walk around the trash pull out during prep to get to the sink --- something I would do much more then scrape plates to put in the DW. LIvewireoak, We finally conceded (and glad we did) to having the sink on the island so all of this is on the island. I initially was going to put the trash on the edge of my prep but using an entire cabinet for trash just doesn't sit well for me. We think for us having it under the sink makes so much more sense. We even tested it at a few model homes, and I barely had to move to the side for my DH to be able to pull the 18" side of the sink base open. Unless, I'm not getting something, I'm thinking now that this set up might even be best. It sound good to not have to go around the trash to get to the sink when I'm prepping. The set up would then be DW, pull out trash 18" cabinet door under the sink, drain side of the sink with the garbage disposal, and 5' prepping area....See MorePull-out cutting board over trash?
Comments (25)Elkay, when I remodeled my kitchen in 2012, the KD suggested the pullout cutting board on glides over the trash bin, similar to the one shown in the 2nd photo in your original post, i.e., no hole in the board. One difference was that drawer front pulled down, rather than being attached to the cutting board. I thought it was a great idea and went ahead with it; however, it was not useful. When I remodeled again in 2015 (long story), I took out the cutting board and replaced it with a horizontal spice drawer. Also removed a narrow pullout spice cabinet that had been installed next to the range in 2012. Problems with the pullout cutting board were: (1) It tended to move around when I was cutting. I prefer to have a work surface that is immobile when I have a sharp object in my hand. (2) Juice from cut fruit (tomatoes, oranges) rolled off the edge of the board onto the floor. (3) When the cutting board and trash can were extended, they blocked access to adjacent cabinets and counter space, so I needed to make sure I had everything ready before I started cutting. (The board was near a corner.) I compost fruit and vegetable scraps, so they go into a compost can on my counter, not into the trash can below, so it was not that useful. It took up valuable space that was better served with a spice drawer - I didn't like the vertical spice drawer because it meant kneeling down to reach the spices on the bottom shelf....See Moremccb1
