Pretty Trash: Wastebaskets In Home Design
Trash cans are one of those things that too many people just don't think about in terms of how they affect a home's design. This functional item is a thing that we all have. Most of us even have more than one in our homes. Why not take the time to choose the trash cans that will add the most decor benefit to the house?
Of course, in some homes, the trash can is hidden. In many places, though, it's tucked under a table or desk or counter but is still visible to the eye. By selecting a design that matches or complements the decor, you can make your room look more cohesive. Guests may not even be able to define just what pulls the room together but your attention to little details like this will not go unnoticed.
Choosing the right waste basket does require some thought. Do you want a vintage design or a contemporary one? Should you choose a neutral color or one that stands out? Take your entire room into consideration and you'll make the right decision.

One of my favorite design tricks is when the wastebasket in a room is made from the same materials as the rest of the room's furniture or shelving. In this case, a uniquely-shaped wooden trash basket matches the desk and shelving in a home office. So pretty.
I think it's really cool when other forms of baskets and containers are used as trash cans in home design. Here it looks like a vintage hamper or basket is being used as a trash bin in a Victorian kitchen. It fits right in!
Small trash cans are a favorite addition to a room. In bathrooms and near desks that aren't used often, the provide an easy space for throwing away the occasional item. Choose one that matches the design of the floor since a small trash can will be placed close to the floor.
The trash bin here is hidden beneath the sink. It's visible and functional but it's not the key decor piece. However, its old tin style adds to the shabby design of this old style home. These little touches make a huge difference in interior design.
Are those tall baskets being used as trash and recycling bins in this kitchen? If so, I think that's a genius idea!
I don't see a trash can in this picture but it seems like the perfect space for one. Surely there would be trash from makeup and hair supplies used at this sitting area. A small white or floral trash can would fit in nicely here.
At first glance, I thought that wonderful metal stand next to the sink was a trash can. Wouldn't it make a great one? Of course, it would ned a flat bottom and a bag to line it but I think the contrasting color (in comparison to the white of the rest of the room) would make it a terrific functional piece here.
A laundry room really requires a small trash can for throwing out lint, dryer cloths, etc. Match the design of the trash can to the decor of the room for a put-together look.
I would love to see a bright yellow and/or green trash can in this kitchen. It would perfectly accent the existing color scheme. Trash cans are great as accent pieces!
