Need a bit of help with changing my current floor plan
Comments (14)I am thinking about your idea of making the dining room into a guest bedroom next to a full bath, then using the bedroom/office next to the kitchen to expand the kitchen, change the window there into a back door, and change the master bedroom closet space for some of the office space. That is what you wanted to do, right? First, over in the dining area, the bathroom needs to be enlarged to add a tub or shower. That space must come from the pantry area, I guess. Just extend the half-bath wall until it hits the outside wall and remove the wall between the bath and the pantry, and there is your full bathroom space. Add a bathroom window, now that you have an outside wall, if you can. Now this small third bedroom will need a closet, to be a legal bedroom. Your best bet for that is to use the wall adjacent to the garage. The door to the bedroom will be a mirror image of the door to the bathroom, on the other side of the wall that separates them. This way, the bedroom does not really share a wall with the garage, it is the closet that will be colder in the winter and hotter in the summer. I have no idea how small that bedroom becomes, since you do not have any dimensions listed in the diagram I used. The rooms are really too small to add unnecessary doorways. You don't have to have the third bedroom have a separate entrance into the bathroom. The bathroom door is just outside the bedroom door, and that is the best you can do with the space that you have. After all, there is not a master bath in this house, why have a guest bedroom with a private entrance to a bath? What do you think, is the guest room usable?...See Morecloset and bedroom dilemma
Comments (1)You might want to post this in the Building a Home forum. Be sure to explain what you want to accomplish, if the home is already existing or if you are modifying a plan for a house yet to be built, and what walls can move, if any, and if you can expand beyond the footprint. To me, this looks like one floor of a two-flat, as they are called in Chicago, which would limit what you can do....See Moremismatch tile in closet vs. bedroom
Comments (3)Since you have other tile that you "eventually hope to replace", I would suggest forming a plan now. You'll need to consider the following things: 1. Do you want the same flooring throughout? You say you don't "hate" the look of different flooring, but that is not the same as "I love having different flooring:" 2. What would be the time line for doing the other flooring? Is it one year? Five years? Twenty years? 3. How good are you at delaying gratification? Can you live with a floor you want to change (what you already have) for a year until you are ready to do everything else? Could you live with it for five years? 4. Is the bedroom flooring you have currently usable for the next year or do you have to do something? 5. Are you OK with ripping out the new flooring in the bedroom when you re-do the other floors because you decide then that you want it all the same? When you answer those questions, you'll know what to do....See Morenarrow low hallway:white or natural interior closet and bedroom doors?
Comments (2)I'd consider white doors with a mcm style for the hall, and then continue the white trim into the rest of your spaces. You may be able to keep the other stained doors if your trim is consistent, or you might want to switch them all out to be the same. Are your current doors a flat slab? Are they nice quality or not? Do you have stained trim everywhere?...See Morepatty_cakes42
