Tips for organizing corners of rooms?

What's your suggestion for organizing corners of rooms with furniture on both walls? For example in my bedroom I have a large dresser on one wall and a large chest of drawers on the other wall and a bunch of boxes and containers stacked in the corner between them. I'd love to find a way to organize the stuff in those boxes better then just having them all stacked there. Some are very different shapes so it looks pretty junky right now. Nothing in that corner I can get rid of. So ideas anyone?

You have to ask yourself why things are stored in that corner to begin with. No where else to put it? No time/energy to deal with it? The objects require too many decisions in order to process? Are these boxes holding legitimate items that you have to keep, like financial records? There are two ways to go, either (1) attack the entire corner at once, determine where the new home will be, and move them there now or (2) take the Flylady approach and deal with the boxes 15 minutes at a time. I've noticed that the more I organized things, the ability to let them go forever, even financial documents, becomes much easier because I've learned that most things can be replaced. Can you free up space in the dresser or chest of drawers for the things stored in the corner? Can you pack it down tighter until you are ready to get rid of it, so that there is a smaller pile in the corner? What's in the boxes?

What's in the boxes? How often do you access them? If you have to keep all the contents and store them in your room. Here are some ideas: 1) look on Craig's List or Freecycle for a free or really cheap piece of furniture that you can use for storage in that corner and/or at the foot of your bed. For example, amoire, bookcase, toy/hope chest, storage bench, shipping crate, etc. If needed, you can fix them up (sand and paint, etc.) and use them to store your stuff. 2) cover cardboard boxes using fabric, contact paper, or wall paper, and add labels to them. Just having pretty boxes that are all the same size and stack nicely will help eliminate the junky look. 3) can you store under the bed? 4) take a table, hide all the stuff under it, add a fabric curtain or table cloth and a stool/chair. It will hide your stuff and you'll have a functional "desk" or dressing table to use in your room. 5) matching plastic bins that stack.

Thank's Sasha's Mommy. Martha is a wealth of information. When our kids lived at home they had under the bed containers for storage, though they were not on wheels. Didn't need to be with carpeted floors. I also use drawer dividers, but not in the bedroom drawers. I do have a fabric "box" with dividers that was meant for ornament storage that I sort my socks in. When Alex was a toddler we lived in a small apartment while my hubby was going to school in Colorado where we used the drawer in the TV stand that was meant to store an Atari game system. Ha ha ha. I think that just dated me! We have pegboard in our daughter's walk in closet, but it was put there since she joined the Air Force a couple months after we moved here so it became my fabric and craft storage room. I am so going to have to use her filing system for extra buttons and yarn that come with clothing though. That is brilliant. I can't believe I didn't think of that since I'm always using photo storage pages for craft storage. I fold my fitted sheets the way she does. Think my Mom taught me that. When I designed our walk in closet, hubby and I built it, I put floor to almost ceiling shelves for our shoes and boots. They don't pull out, but that's not necessary. I could be a mini Martha!

I’ve only just discovered this board but what a great thread! Building on Raye Smith’s suggestion, go round your house with your smartphone or camera. Take an overall picture of each room in each direction, then close ups of any smaller stuff, closet and drawer contents, identifying marks/serial/models numbers on appliances/TVs/other electronics, etc, etc. You can do this over several days if necessary. When you are done, add labels to each photo indicating what it’s of (Tommy’s room, master closet, jewellery box, etc) and upload the pictures to the cloud or copy to a flash drive and store in your safe/safe deposit box. Hopefully, you will never need it but in case you ever need to make an insurance claim, you won’t have to rely on memory. If you can manage it, update the pictures annually.

I used to live in the same sized house and it was 3 br/ 1 3/4 bath. The key was hidden storage and vertical living. Every bed had plastic storage pullouts. The edges of every closet had skinny shelves for supply storage. Each bedroom had 1 or more tall bookshelf. Those held books, baskets and bins for other items. Every desk had a book shelf sitting on top. Even the small dining room had a tall bookshelf in it. Cookbooks, daily dishes neatly stacked, napkins and flatware in rack wad always stationed there, freeing up space in the kitchen cabinets. Basically, we used a bookshelf as a drop zone coming in to the house. Each person has their own shelf, and all purses, shoes and backpacks go there. Multiple key racks are on the side of it. If any kids stuff is out of their room, it goes into a basket in the corner. It gets tossed on garbage day. After a week or so, things get put back onto their rooms right away!

Hmm, so my options for the produce drawer are 29 with low humidity for meat and fish (we don't buy much so won't use it for that), 32 low and 32 high humidity, 34 low humidity, and 40 low humidity. They recommend 32 low for a mix of fruits and vegetables and 32 high for just vegetables. That's clearly too cold for citrus (they were like rocks this morning so I moved them to the main compartment!) but the drawer contents will change seasonally. I did find this guide that suggest that maybe 32 isn't a bad setting for most things (though maybe high humidity? I can't figure out what low vs. high means so may need to crack out a hygrometer...) and I should just selectively pull out and store separately the things it doesn't male sense for.

I'm curious too. Why do you HAVE to have that stuff in the corner?

First I'd go through every box - it's very possible that you can get rid of some things.

Next, I'd categorize what's in the boxes as "immediate storage" (things you use regularly) and "long-term storage". Long term can be moved out of the bedroom, with like items boxed together. I can think of a dozen places, even in a small house/apartment, to store stuff.

Immediate storage things should be kept where they can be used, without digging through a box. That means making room elsewhere in the room, in a dresser or closet. Again, the solution is to identify what you can get rid of, or store elsewhere.

I know it's hard to get started, but I've found that once I start getting rid of things, the process snowballs, and it gets easier and easier - especially when the result is more space and less clutter.
