Who makes satin nickel door hardware that won't yellow and peel?

We have satin nickel hardware on our exterior doors manufactured by both Schlage and Kwikset. The finish on both of them yellowed within a couple of years, and eventually started peeling off the metal surface altogether. Kwikset actually replaced my whole handleset for this issue twice under warranty, but the replacements didn't last any longer than the original.

Does any other manufacturer make door hardware in satin nickel finish that holds up better than this? We're in the northeastern U.S., and the doors get sun exposure for about half the day.

My reason for asking is as you probably know quality comes at a price. Emtek, Baldwin, etc are not cheap but they also stay away from plastic guts and bottom end finishes. But sometimes weather and or exposure have allot to do with how the finishes hold up on any product. What finish are you thinking of or do you plan to stick with a Satin Nickel?

The Schlage hardware should have a finish warranty and be eligible for replacement if I am not mistaken.

Good point yadax. At least you have the stuff to hand and can bring it in to the room to see how it looks. We're supposed to be deciding on our shower door this weekend and although we are going frameless, there will still be hinges, etc. writersblock, I agree that it may all end up looking random which is the last thing I want. I'm all for sleek and organized looking. Argh, I just cannot deal with any more decisions! The safest way to go might be everything else in chrome to match what we've already installed.

You did a fantastic job! What a difference a few key touches can make. You know, it wasn't so much that the border was bad, it was more that it was too personal. It was almost like if you'd painted "Ncamy's Kitchen" on the wall. Nothing wrong with it for when it is your kitchen, but of course, I wouldn't want my kitchen to say that. Best thing about it is all the bargains you got for the knobs, lights & faucets. This could have easily cost you three times as much if you hadn't done your homework. Congratulations on a job well done. I hope your house sells quickly. Please come back and tell us when it does!

Okay, I'm back! I ordered a sample order from an online site, which let me pick 3. I picked 3 different finishes, and 3 different styles to get several ideas. I am not a photoshop guru, so only put them on and took pictures... First, what I have in its decaying state: From kitchen cabinet hardware Next, I originally thought I'd do stainless/satin. I like the color, but would probably also like it in stainless. It is a companion pull to the knob above so I can get either in either color. I think I like the stainless knobs, but not sure how it would look on my cabinets (in pulls) without replacing all my hinges... They are weathered also, so appear very dark. But, maybe the hinges wouldn't be that noticable? If I did the stainless pulls, it would probably be the first pull above (in "black iron") Also, we tried some ORB, and I liked them, but DH wasn't thrilled with them...some of them had some "pink" on them.

Many of the longer Gardenweb kitchen reveal threads lost text and photo content when they were imported into Houzz. The good news is, Tamara says the data is not lost, but the threads will have to be repaired manually. No time frame yet, as they’re still working on other issues. Yes there's a finish warranty but the replacements have had the same problem.

I guess my question is whether there are other brands that make better quality satin nickel finishes that hold up to sun exposure and the elements, or do they all have this problem?

OK, since you won't offer help here we go. Low end Schlage and Kwikset are cheap for a reason, Upper end Schlage, Baldwin, Emtek, and variuos other architectural hardware companies should not have this issue. Buying Kwikset and or F series Schlage is not going to be any better or very well may be what you currently have.

I'm sure they were low end since they were both purchased from Home Depot when we were new homeowners and didn't know any better. Anyway I did a search for peeling satin nickel finish and most search results were for problems with Schlage. I couldn't find any such complaints for Emtek or Baldwin so those look like good recommendations. Thanks for the help.

Yes, sticking with satin nickel, or at least something in that color range. I considered changing but it looks good on our black door. The railing and trim are also in the silver/nickel color range so that's the finish that ties into the overall look.

All my silage locks turne. yellow and on this site you answered without knowing if other brands will have the same issue. I will no trust this site for answers
