Need help with bedroom decorating

I am trying to come up with color and pattern ideas to decorate my bedroom. It is very brown due to all the woodwork. The only colors my husband prefers I don't incorporate are green, yellow, purple (light shades/hues are ok)!

Unfortunately, I am limited with furniture layout due to many built ins in the room. The furniture and mirror will stay where they are. The carpet has to stay.....for now. I am open to painting the walls. I was originally thinking of possibly painting the wall area above the bed for some contrast.

I apologize for the glare in the pictures, but I had already taken down the curtains before I took the pictures!

I have been scouring the Internet for ideas, but am interested in hearing any ideas from anyone who would like to share them!

I think blues and Browns are very pretty together.

I agree that lining the shades would solve my problem, and I may end up doing that if I can find the appropriate fabric. I want a consistent look in all of the windows on the front of the house, so the liner would need to be a dark brown to work with the dark wood blinds already in place in the living room. Putting the same dark wood blinds in the bedrooms would work too, but it's pricey. I think I'd still want curtains of some sort, if only for the texture. As for the bed location: we've had it facing the windows, and I hate it. It just doesn't feel right. So we sold the three low dressers that used to be under the windows and replaced them with these two taller dressers, and that's it; we're done. No more assembling Ikea dressers! Right now, adding curtains seem to be the best way to preserve both the view through the bamboo shades and our privacy.

You really DON'T need to figure any of this out yet! Are you sleeping on a floor now? You have a bed frame , a mattress? You like blue and green Buy a simple wood platform.....buy a blue or green inexpensive upholstered headboard! Push a platform up to that headboard! Or simply move in with what you have. A new home is a beginning, an opportunity to make it a home you can love for a long time. You spend as you can and in ways that make some long term sense. You DON'T paint yourself into corners, add to a gray floor with more gray floor, that no amount of decorating over the next five years will ever make better. It's a journey, yes a destination....but emphasize journey: )

That is a lot of wood! Maybe curtains on each side of the window at the head of your bed that extend all the way to the corners to soften the room?

I agree, choose bedding or share what it looks like. I think your room looks very unique and special with the woodwork. An area rug or runner over the carpet might be in order, too, if you want to update the look without changing the floor.

Why is the bed up against the window wall, is that like a built in headboard? I love a bed under the window, it's great to have the fresh air while sleeping!

What a hard room to decorate with all the built ins. Has it always been a bedroom? The only way I can see it working is if you put the tall chest in the closet, the mirrorless dresser where the tall chest is and your bed head under the window where the mirrorless dresser is now. Otherwise, the suggestions of new bedding, curtains and throw rugs is very good.

I don't see any shade of blue in the room, given that the carpeting appears to be yellow and orange/brown.

It's so neutral in there, you can go in any direction. I'd pick a bedspread I really liked and then go from there.

Are you open to painting all that wood? It is not particularly attractive and painting it would open up a lot of options.

I feel like head of the bed needs something to soften all the wood around it. I wonder if you could find or make an upholstered headboard- covered with a simple textured linen color. then lean pillows against it and find a great comforter with the linen color in it. The way the bed is set up with wood around it reminds me of a yacht! You could have fun and run with the idea, by having curtains on the window behind the bed and then place two small lamps up on the ledge on either side of your upholstered headboard. On the floor at the foot of the bed place a rug. Have fun

It's an exceptionally unique bedroom. Since there's so much wood and the carpet seems to be brown as well, I'd go with a nice light color for your bedding. Light blue does go beautifully with brown. I have always found that getting my bedding first was the way to go. Then I pull a color or two from there for window treatments, art, pillows, wall color, etc. You need to lighten it up. You said your husband wants to stay away from yellow, but I just saw a beautiful bedding set that has light blue and yellow on a white background from which you could pull out the blues and it would be light and cheerful.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water used a lot of natural materials including wood. Pittsburgh Paints made a collection of paint colors based on his original inspiration...I think any of those colors would work well in your room...the deeper tones have the ability to stand up and balance the darkness of the wood.

Thank you all for the great suggestions! To answer some of the questions....

- the bed is where it is because there is a built in headboard with sliding compartments (I prefer my old scrolled headboard, but have to use this one). If I move the bed, there is a huge empty opening under the built in area. This has always been a bedroom, and that is how the previous owner designed it.

- we would never paint the wood.

Im going to start today with choosing my bedding as many of you suggested. I love so many of the ideas here, I will be implementing a lot of them!

Too bad there are sliding compartments above your headboard....because it looks like your mirror-less dresser would fit in there. Oh well, I know you can make your room beautiful with bedding, lamps, paint and artwork. Let us see a picture when you get done.

Can you paint the bulk head? Or is that wood? It just looks brown in the photo.

What about the counter tops? Is it a possibility to cover the fake green marble?

Do you have to use the compartments in the headboard? Or could you put a padded headboard in front of it?
