DirectTV internet streams
Comments (4)Sorry, I was confusing. I had OTA with an antenna (and I still do), but my favorite channel sometimes lost its sound. My wife persuaded me to get cable, which I did, but I decided to replace the cable with DirectTV, because of the internet perks. However, I can't get that same channel on DTV's internet service (it comes in fine on my TV)....See MoreA month without TV
Comments (22)No TV here, not since 1994, when I divorced (@CindyMac!) and my former husband got the TV. We have Prime and Netflix and can access PBS streaming, as we are members. We have a 30" monitor on the wall in our den downstairs (not a "smart" tv, there is a shelf for the dedicated, old and tired laptop) we also have a newer, nicer, good screen quality laptop if we want to watch in bed. We have a not-ironclad rule in our house that the TV doesn't go on until the sun goes down, so in the summer, we don't watch much at all, in the winter, that's our TV time (and when it's absolutely miserable and raining in the summer). As to what else we do, we are early risers, so in bed no later than 10 most nights, and eat dinner at 7-7:30, so there's time for an episode of a Netflix/Prime show, but we also read, I do needlework (OK, rarely, but I do do it), crossword puzzles and listen to music, Sirius/XM is so worth the $200+- a year, there is an amazing variety of music and other programming available, and a true bargain IMO. We also listen to NPR, that and the NYT online are our main sources of news, I detest TV news, except PBS News Hour, I cannot take the preening anchors delivering bad news "with a gleam in her (his) eye" (credit: The Eagles). I also detest all those G rated shows, when we visit DH's family (children long grown and gone), we must suffer through Big Bang, Seinfeld reruns, Modern Family, et al, ugh, they might as well be Three's Company IMO, insipid, overused plots, laugh tracks, bad acting, lazy writing and golly gee, most everyone is white and rich, with houses to match. No thanks. If I'm watching TV I want it to be adult; nudity, language, grit, detailed and "slow burn" plot lines, so no network shows for me, although I do plan on checking out Atlanta, I've heard it is good, and fairly sophisticated. And yes, I do have a kid, she's now 19, and when she was 6, we bought a used 13" TV with built in DVD/VHS player so she could watch Arthur, her absolute fav. We checked tapes and DVDs out from the library, and she was able to watch Arthur, Zoom and other non-commercial shows. She didn't turn our culturally or socially bereft, and wasn't even ostracized in our small, rural school, TV watching is so bifurcated now no one expects others to watch exactly what they do. I say unplug, you will be glad you did....See MoreMuslim looking male image at news. Hacked?
Comments (8)Thanks, everyone. Chuggerguy -- I appreciate your doing an image search. I'll have to learn how to do that. I read about the person and circumstances. What a sad, crazy political landscape. Steve J -- I came about as close as I could to elbowing her in the throat. She is very much a busy body & takes it upon herself to intrude. She plays cagey. I only got the most minimal of "okay", "sorry" weak apology from her. I don't see her often, but have to interact with her from time to time. Yes, I was foolish. As for apps, I guess I don't understand them but was under the impression that I would have to have the "location services" "ON" pretty much all the time. I'm operating under some encumbrances, that limit how much I can get done and concentrate. It's like having a chunk of my brain dedicated to coping. I should have upgraded/updated way back. I will try what Elmer suggested, then, do a clean update and reset -- as soon as I can. I think in order to stream directly from CNN or MSNBC, etc., I need to get the apps. ACraftyLady-- thank you. Yes, I made a mistake gong to and oddball site, but I don't have cable and I am, especially since 2016, a news junky. So while resting my back, I like listening to streaming news. I read a lot as well, but sometimes am too exhausted to read. The busy-body helper is being evasive, but I'm confident that she went to a .com site, as in FindNHmoney dot com She's being coy (immature) and I cannot get much from her (yes, I asked politely, gave her the benefit of the doubt, and was patient. Three emails. I don't think she really gets what she did wrong. And I'm unable to get a straight answer from her as to what details she provided. But from the many spam emails, she clearly gave a full name (which I don't use), email (for whatever jack butt reason?!), birth date on and on. Who needs corporate data breaches, with someone like her? It would be tempting to pay her back for her "help." Elmer -- Good idea. That might help and I'll do that soon. Those steps used to work with my desk PC when I'd get caught in some "no exit" loop. My PC has up to date protection. Steve and others. I respect your comments about security. On huge sec flaw in real life is Medicare. In many cases, a person has to have their ss# as there M-care ID number. I've tried appealing to gov and "they" keep arguing that it must be and remain that way. Sometimes they attempt to argue that "everything is computerized," but that is not true and even so, is not necessarily secure. When subscribers go for an appointment, they are asked for their M-care ID. So, the card and ID number is first handed to a clerical worker (human) before it is entered into their office database (with who-knows-what sort of security). It is not unheard of for human staff to trade in these numbers. I have a few friends who have a state chosen Medicare and that agency gives them a totally separate ID number. My driver's license is a totally different number (that s s). Thanks again, folks....See MoreI guess I must be addicted...........
Comments (27)My relative and I do not know why this has not been in the news, but Oklahoma City is in a state of emergency. They had a freak ice storm that knocked out the power to most of the city and its suburbs. the central part of the state is affected. This is the 4th day that my relative (in Oklahoma City) has been without power. Since their soil was not frozen, there were no ice that stayed on the ground, however, all surfaces above the ground are coated. Trees are bent over or broken, grass blades are coated with ice and confusing the rabbits, and power lines are down. My relative has a small alternator set that is large enough to power the refrigerator and freezer plus a few lights. He has no heat. His only source of heat in the house is a gas fired log in a small fireplace. Its holding the house at a chilly 59 F. His alternator goes through 26 gals of gasoline per day. Currently, there are lineman crews from 20 states from as far as Ohio. Three days ago, there were only a few crews available. I would expect poor service in central Oklahoma for a few days....See Moremare_wbpa
