So if you like adult coloring books, how about...

Doodling? I was fascinated by a book that I found in the books department of our Ollie's Bargain Outlet. It is a' Brain Games for Kids" book called "Daring Doodle Book." I bought one for my sister's 84th birthday because she whiles away a lot of alone time with pencil in hand making lists, notes from phone calls etc, and doodling.

After looking over the book at home I went and bought one for myself. I have absolutely no artistic talent, but I love the "kid" in me that this has brought out. 150 full color pages gives several drawing lessons, and lots of pages to fill in or complete a picture. Like doodle what the little girl in the bed dreaming about or what did the snake with the big empty space in it's belly eat. And this one cracked me up, a dog and a man are looking down a hole where a bunch of tunnels are shown under ground. I am supposed to doodle what is in the sewer tunnels. Other pages suggest I doodle everything that is red, or fill up the fish bowl with colorful fish, etc.

The book at Ollie's cost 2.99. I found it online for as much as 11.99. A great gift to stimulate a kid's imagination...or an adult like me. I am having a blast and so in my sister.

That sounds like fun, but it reminds me too much of art exercises that I hated and rebelled against. It's a lot different when you're not being judged! And you can skip the ones you don't like or relate to.

I did a progressive doll once where each doll also had a journal you were supposed to add a page to, talking about your part of the doll. I remember doing really different sketches from anything in my normal style because each doll had a character of her own, and the only rule for the media is that they don't wreck the journal. Your examples remind me of that as well. ;)

I kind of love Zentangle, which is all about doodling with intention, but I get bored with it, so can only do a really small area. For the student, however, or the I-can't-draw person, or someone looking for more original designs to color, it's perfect. While doodling the Zentangle way, you learn all about positive and negative space, texture, fills, depth, accents and highlights -- while just doodling for fun to waste a little time, paper and ink.

I totally hate the whole idea of "book crafts", since they're all based on the underlying assumption that printed books are now just so much trash that needs to find a use somewhere. Realistically you can't get the effect that makes most of the wreaths and stuff work well if you use recent books, since it's the toning of old paper/ink that creates the effect. I write a certain number of computer books, which have the shelf life of milk. I wouldn't in the least mind tearing up older editions for this sort of thing (they have no cultural or aesthetic significance), but a wreath made from one of those wouldn't look in the least like the ones in the illustrations. Sheet music bothers me even more. It's possible and maybe likely that for now at least there's at least one copy of any old book in a library someplace (but probably not for much longer, alas), but once sheet music goes out of print, it's usually essentially gone and not coming back again and not preserved anywhere, unless it's a scholarly edition of a classical piece.

Vee - Thanks for the kudos. You're right, I do have a FT job and a DH who is, I am happy to say, much more domesticated that I am. He does the majority of the cooking/clean-up while I clean the house every day in small parts (mostly putting things away type of thing)... Plus it's lucky that DH is quite understanding about my need to read (as I have always been a big reader since he has known me), so he just goes to the back of the house and either watches tv or plays his computer games. However, we do work on spending quality time together so it all rather works out in the wash. Every now and then, a book may cross his path, but not often. It's good to have different interests... One thing that we DON"T have and a lot of people do is kids and I think that gives us a lot more freedom than otherwise...

Thanks Donna, the blue butterflies one I did in honor of my mom. Soon after her passing I, my sisters and my niece had some very interesting and touching blue butterfly experiences. Lisa how fortunate for you that you were introduced to the coloring. I first saw the use of coloring as therapy when my mom broke her hip. In the recovery facility they used it to help them relax and focus on something other than their pain and situation they were in. My mom enjoyed it very much even though her hands were twisted and deformed by Rheumatoid arthritis she was able to do some very pretty work. I am glad I decided to give it a try. Interestingly enough as a child I was never really into coloring and was not very good at it either. I feel your addiction pain lol.

I bought some at hobby lobby for $5, some at Walmart for about that. I ordered the Angie Grace from Amazon for around $9 I think. And I got some on eBay for between $4-5. I need to check out the below 5 dollar store. What brand are the ones from there?
