I was so excited to see the ripened fruit, I didn't think to take a picture of it on the plant. I had completely forgotten about it and just happened to notice the aroma while working in that bed today, so it is a wonder a squirrel or something did not get it first. But here are some pictues of (a) the plant that still has a few pups attached, (b) the area it is planted in so you can see how it is surrounded and shaded by other plants (it is behind the recently transplanted Persian Shield) and (c) the pineapple itself.

Down here we grow them like cacti - full sun, sandy soil, little water. They suffer in the high summer, and in the wet and cold, but they produce huge sweet fruit like clockwork.

That is good to hear. If they grow in full sun of Zone 10b, then they should do well in similar conditions here. I now have five more pineapple plants from the pups and top of the above plant plus two more that I had rooted last year and I am running out of space to put them. The only place I can think of is the south side of my driveway, which is sunny and sandy. Thanks for the feedback.

Sunny and sandy is best, I agree. However, a lot of years ago here in Lehigh Acres ( 23 mi. east of Ft. Myers, Fla) I grew 80 pineapples under dappled shade under pine trees and had all 80 produce. Some of them didn't pop a bloom when they were due to and I asked the old timer who gave me the pups what I should do. This guy grew things you couldn't imagine would grow down here. He gave me some coarsely-ground up carbon from a machine shop and told me to drop a pinch down the center of each plant and within a couple of weeks, they bloomed. I found later as I planted more pups and added the carbon as soon as they got a little size, they bloomed much sooner than otherwise.

I grow mine in native soil in almost full sun. There are those who grow in pots because of nematodes but that has not been a problem for me.

Thats a great looking pineapple! For the first time, I rooted and planted the top of a store bought pineapple. It's been a month now and it's looking good. I have it in a pot. Any tips?

Wear gloves or eat over a bowl. Homegrown is a fair bit juicier than store bought.

Use about half your pineapple to cut into small chunks and add to marinara sauce for 'Hawaiian Spaghetti'; the pineapple juice will help cut the acidity of the tomatoes and the chunks add a nice flavor when you get some.
Don't put your pineapple too close to large-leaved plants, the whorls of the pineapple are sharp and strong and will shred other plants blowing in the wind and rain.
When spreading fertilizer or mulch, be careful around the pineapple plants as it is easy to get stuff clogged at the base of the whorls and it can be difficult or even painful trying to clean them out.

Aside from that, no real tips on growing them, I just found a spot, planted it and more or less forgot about it.

The only two I've had produce fruit (so far) have been in pots, in mostly sunny locations. I've put most of the pups in the ground because I decided I didn't want to tie up my big pots for up to two years growing a two dollar pineapple. We'll see is the nematodes get them or not. So far, they seem to be doing fine.

This is the second home grown I've eaten, which spoiled me. No more store bought unless I can find one a lot less green than the ones I've bought in the past.

I have several pineapple plants , I started them all from the tops of pineapples I purchased . Last year I got 2 off of 1 plant , it is the first one I planted , I have only gotten them from that plant and none of the others grew any yet , even though they are all planted right next to each other . I was told that they only produce every 2 yrs , is that true ?

Yes, pineapples like other bromeliads generally put on size for one year and then flower (and fruit) the second yet. You can get some that fruit the first year and you can even induce flowering and fruiting by providing a source of ethylene in January/February, usually in the form of apple slices, but generally they take two years.
