How's the weather and how does your garden grow? Long.........

My weather has been between mild and hot. Sunny and Foggy, pretty close to normal for this time a year.
Some of my plantings are doing well, others are not.
The one tomato plant seems to have a "wilt" issue. I don't know how that will turn out. The sweet peas are blooming, very pretty, but the plants themselves are short of the 5'-6' tall described on the seed packet.
All the herbs are doing well, except the dill. Hmmm.
This is my first time planting Red Onions, and they are supposed to be ready on June 18th, they don't look like the "4-5" orbs pictured on the net, but I pulled one, and it tasted great.
Naval orange and Lemon trees look good.
The weeds are growing like weeds.
How about your weather and garden, or stuff in general?

I am a bit behind you in the garden department, though the tomatoes look wonderful and have grown a bit already, I have 4 Big Red heirloom tomatoes, 2 paste ones and a cherry. Hope I can keep them all well, we have to think about water, that definitely keep one from going overboard.
Today I will plant 2 cucumbers, a slicing one and a lemon one. Squash ig germinating.
I have flowers in containers, looking very nice, and there will be some petunias and marigold in the ground to fill out the garden.
It's been seasonal on the warmish side, Friday they have "promised" a triple digit (102) and I'm sure there will be more of them.
Next the weekend is the Harley Redwood run, busy highway and the Rodeo, feel sorry for the cowboys and the animals in that heat.

Chicago weather has been odd. We went from spring cool to summer heat-90's-back to November cold and way too much rain. That said, the roses are starting to bloom and most of the veggies are doing ok. The only issue were my bean seeds. Planted green stringless, wax and flat Italian and not a one sprouted. So I have re-seeded and we shall see. Red and white cabbages, chard, peppers, 18 various toms are all doing good. Herbs are ok but the basil is not a happy camper in the cool. And neither am I. My bones want warm and sunny.

Michelle: Don't let the "subdivision" thing fool you. It's not what you and I know from Florida. I looked in the Tobacco Branch subdivision (over by Lake Fontana) and best I could tell, subdivision meant I could see my neighbors roof (if I looked down and over at just the right angle) and there was a HOA that maintained the road. I ended up not in a "subdivision". Road maintenance is important if you are going to be on the mountains. The state maintains our road literally up to the sign that says "State Maintenance Ends". When I mean literally, I mean I have seen them back the snowplow even with the sign to start clearing. Since we are above the sign, we have to clear the road and bridge from the house to the sign. As far as flooding, we have a creek and even with heavy rains it stays in the banks,remember that water flows downhill, so when the lower elevations are flooding we are not because the water moves pretty fast downstream. As far as sun, remember each mountain has different faces. The people that have a summer pace on the evening side of where I live have "hotter" exposure because they get sun in the hotter parts of the day. If you are worried about heat, look for a place that has trees closer to the house for the shade. Maggie Valley is very expensive (in my book)but not everything in a valley has valley in the name. For example the Leatherman Gap area outside of Franklin does't sound like a valley, but it is (and a very pretty one at that). The only plants that I have lost to water are those that I planted too close to the spring and creek, thinking that the ground would dry in the summer (it didn't and now I don't know why I thought it would). I can tell you what I have, but no photos! Stevia Chocolate mint Chippewa and Pink Lemonade Blueberry Illinois Everbearing Mulberry Prok Persimmon Starks 2-N-1 trees: pear, cherry, plum Pawpaws, Penn. Golden and Sunflower All are in their first year, but I am excited about them.

I have a clematis that appeared where I don't think I planted one. I can't be certain, because I have put a lot of clematis in over the years, and some of them were written off as dead. So it could be a stealth survivor Clematis, or it could be a seedling from my Etoile Violette in back. It's a purple clematis with four petals, quite attractive. I certainly won't complain. I like letting Clematis twine through the Virginia Creeper to add a little color and interest. This year is definitely the year for mystery plants--first the mystery Penstemons, and now this. Or maybe this is a hint of things to come in a maturing garden where seed heads are often left to mature for the birds. Right now we have goldfinches in front raiding the Bachelor Buttons as they go to seed. In back, there is the usual assortment of mourning doves, house finches, blue jays, woodpeckers and a lovely Western Tanager. That's why I don't get too surprised about "volunteer" plants. Lisa

OakleyOK - tell me about the topiary on your porch. I haven't been brave enough to put a shrub in a container yet, b/c I'm afraid that I would kill it. But I really like that look. I'd like to try some on the back patio. I've started a tradition (2 years now - does that make it a tradition?) of taking a day off work each spring to work on a landscaping project. The first year I created a new bed on the north side of the house. It is doing great. This year, after much inner conflict, I decided to use my day to make a vegetable/herb bed. I actually made two beds. I spent my day off and several weekends digging up bermuda and amending the soil. I do think in the long run, it will be nice, but my garden was a bust this year. I'm a little bummed b/c I used so much of my (teeny amount of) free time and so much energy for practically no return. The weather is so nice right now, I'm anxious to go outside and plant a few shrubs to make myself feel like I made progress this year! Somewhere I have a few photos, but we have switched computers and I never seem to have anything where I need it!

Daily weather has been strange - somewhat mild winter, lots of wind, then hot February and March with more wind and a couple of hard freezes in late April. That double whammy hurt the majority of the fruit trees and a large number of shade trees. The trees looks so strange as they struggle to rebud and leaf out.

We are continuing in a severe drought so everything except the weeds are almost nonexistent. There are so many trees, some 50 years and older, that have not survived. It's sad for trees to die off, especially ones of that age and size. We can't just stick them in the ground and they grow as they do in many areas, we have to baby them for several years to get them established.

I did have DH plow up the garden area. I have tomatoes and peppers in the greenhouse that need to be planted, but I'm not sure that things will do much at all, even with extensive watering - darn it. Probably should have just started greenhouse varieties, but that's no fun.

The Sweet Autumn Clematis and the Malva Zebrina are the only two plants that are doing well outside.

But - and yes I am going to shout - WE HAVE SOME CHANCE OF SHOWERS FOR THE NEXT 7 DAYS! Send your good thoughts and prayers this way, please.

Everyone can post pictures of yards and anything else that is growing nicely and I will live vicariously through them...LOL.

While I may complain about the drought, my thoughts and prayers are with the people of Oklahoma. It is almost beyond comprehension that deadly storms hit the same area two days in a row and then hit on another day just a few miles from them. Unexplainable.
