How do you like your decorative mirrors used as vanity mirrors
Comments (6)One night, while brushing my teeth in front of our large plate mirror, I noticed it looked a little off. On closer inspection I realized one of the clips had come away from the wall and the whole mirror was on the verge of coming off the wall! The clips had been installed with heavy duty plastic anchors, and the weight of the mirror over time had caused the drywall to eventually give way. We ended up remodeling the bathroom and installed a large, framed mirror using a heavy duty cleat hanger (Hangman is one brand) which is perfect. The cleat hanger is two long pieces of metal, one of which is attached to the wall; if the mirror is less than 16" wide I recommend trying to have at least one screw in a stud and use toggle bolts for the other screws. The other piece of metal is attached to the frame of the mirror. The two pieces of metal hook onto each other to securely attach the mirror to the wall. (We used this same type of cleat hanger to attach a custom stainless steel backsplash over our range in our kitchen; we had stainless steel wrapped around a large piece of plywood to add depth and dimension to the backsplash.) When we remodeled our second bathroom, we decided to keep the plate mirror, but used extra clips and toggle bolts as needed to make certain it wasn't going anywhere!...See MoreHow do you conceal TV wires over Fireplace?
Comments (9)OK...so i am going to try continue this thread after..umm...4.5 years! From above post: "you can chop some grout out between the bricks and put your wires in there and re-grout with cement over that". I would like to know if this is feasible in my case since it might be the way to go for me. I have 7ft wide and 0.5 ft deep stone wall (rough surface) running from floor all the way to ceiling (high; 14ft or so). It appears there is an inch or two of concrete connecting the stones and the wall behind it. The goal is the same - put a tv on this wall above the fireplace. Doing the wiring by removing one of the stones and running electrical behind the tv is surely the best way, but the labor charges are above what i want to spend. So that brings to the question: Since there is a mantle which leaves only ~3inches of stone exposed (and hence the cable if i run it down behind the tv and behind the mantle) I have only 3inches cable exposed from front view and ~6inches from side view (depth of stone is 6in). Do you think i can remove some of the mortar mix in between the stones, run the extension cord cable + hdmi + cat5 through the groove, put a duct tape and cover it with matching (hopefully) mortar mix? Is it also possible to remove a little bit of that cement (vertically connecting the stones with the wall behind) and do the same concealing patchwork to run the wire down? Let's see if anyone picks my ques...See MoreFireplace Mantel Makeover - Do you Like it? (PICS)
Comments (16)pattycakes - Thanks, I love the idea of changing things periodically. I do have some special decorations for the Christmas season, but other than that, I'm hoping to swap out the hydrangeas for fall foliage, twigs, or whatever is in season. folkvictorian - The creamy colored items were what drew me to the inspiration picture. I probably wouldn't have thought to use such a light color, but when I saw the picture, I knew it could work. Anything dark gets lost against the brown tones of the stone. teacats - Thank you, and I am a flower garden girl who loves anything with blooms. oakleyok - I struggled with this spot for the past several years, so if I've saved you any grief with your own mantel, I'm very glad! Did you post about your mantel before? I seem to remember reading something about someone's situation, and I don't recall if it was you or not. carolefm and jeane - Thanks, and I'm glad if the hearth doesn't need anything, as I've pushed my decorating pea brain as far as it can go for awhile - LOL. kitchenkelly - Thank you! It means a lot to hear positive feedback from this group. I am such a novice that I always feel hesitant to post pictures of my humble attempts, but I'm glad I did now. natal - I purchased the tin from an antique dealer online, and it came painted this way. I do like the natural color, but again, it would get somewhat lost in the stone background if too much were exposed. Maybe I can sand some more off, but I'm a little chicken to try that....See MoreDo you like either one of these mirrors?
Comments (53)Laurie - Hi there . . . your home is looking great so far. As mentioned, I have that same style mirror in my foyer. I purchased it from Gump's, though. But, I had originally been contemplating either a black rectangular mirror or some plates for the wall above the bench in the foyer. There was just something about that mirror that I liked. Someone here recommended it to me, and though it wasn't something I would have chosen on my own, I kept coming back to it in my mind. Now, there are those who will say that they don't like it because of the side view in its spot now. But, honestly, even if I had put it over our fireplace, it could be seen from a side view perspective in the kitchen. There's a side view almost everywhere in a home when you think about it. I was all obsessed about the side view thing, and now I don't even notice that. The vast majority of the time, one is not looking at it from that exact perspective. I have no buyer's remorse, as I love the mirror. It has really brightened an otherwise plain wall. I love the style, with its antiqued finish and unique shape. Mirrors are more than the views they reflect. I like my mirror because of its light reflectivity. It catches the sunlight from our patio doors and brightens and sparkles up an otherwise ordinary space. In your home, I would choose mirror #1. It seems warmer and more like your decor style. I'm sure your mantel would look great with artwork or plates, or other things too. Sometimes we get caught up in analysis paralysis where we assume that there is only one right choice and all of the other possibilities are wrong choices. Your home is beautiful, and ultimately, it should be filled with things you love - things that you find interesting and that inspire you. If you really love the mirror, go for it. It will look great, and you love it besides. Decorate for the way you want to be surrounded. Jan...See MoreIdaClaire
