nicole, what does repackaged mean? I looked it up and it says that is being outlawed. I don't think Kroger repackages.

rob333....repackaged....when an egg breaks, the remaining 11 eggs get repackaged to sell with other eggs that might be a different color or brand. I just purchased 8 brown eggs and 4 Egglands Best....all in the same carton. :0)

$4.19 for Jumbo size...and they're worth every cent! Had a double yolk-er for breakfast a couple of days ago. Yum! That chicken deserves a raise. :-)

After looking around, I see that those are offered through Kroger, but not their standard of practice (which is what I meant. I worked there for a couple of years). Thanks for the answer!

At Aldi this morning they were $2.57 (large eggs) - $3.27 at Dillons (Kroger affiliate). I only purchase a dozen fresh shell eggs per month now that the price has gone up, and use powdered eggs (which are now less per egg - from my food storage stockpile) and use egg substitutes like chia gel or flaxseed goop when possible. One of the nice things about using powdered eggs are you can often use 1/2 an egg in things like pancakes and muffins and still get nearly the same results. I've also dug out some of my old eggless recipes - what's old is new again ;-).

I heard a radio program this morning. The man from N.Y. said they were paying $11 for 7-1/2 dozen eggs at Sam's Club a few months ago, and now they are $23.

The people I know who have their own hens sell them for the store prices.

You may also be able to save money by purchasing medium eggs instead of large or extra-large. I found this information in the book, "Cut Your Grocery Bill in Half" by Steve & Annette Economides:

Given the small difference in average volume between medium and large eggs, always check the price of medium eggs. If price difference is less than 5-cents per dozen - buy the larger size. If greater than 5-cents, buy the smaller size. 5 medium eggs = 4 large eggs.

The ultimate sad part about this is that eggs were once a great low-cost protein to build a meal around, but not any longer.

2.69- 3.50 for a dozen store bought eggs farm raised eggs are 3 and up a dozen.

Only use jumbo eggs. Now 4.69 here on Long Island. Eggs from a local farm are worth whatever they ask. FRESH eggs are superior.

I just paid $3.85 or a dozen large eggs. I cringe, but then think of how much food value there is there, so I "uncringe"!

On my last shopping trip I did a DIY repackaging. Although the way I did it I don't consider to be especially bad. Their store brand eggs are sold in 12 packs and 18 packs. The 18 packs were on sale 2/$5 however they only had 2 left of them left, both of which had several broken eggs. Next to them was a 12 pack that also had several broken eggs, so I swapped several eggs between the two resulting in a 18 pack of large eggs for $2.50 (Rather than a dozen of the same eggs for $2.79)

I buy 90%+ of my eggs at farmers' markets. (I plan to raise my own when I retire.)

I pay $3.50 - $5.00 per dozen depending on size and source. (Mostly large but sometimes medium)

I have a bad sensitivity to "liquid egg product" or to "powdered egg product", so I don't go there. I am truly not certain what the difference is, but I love my eggy, non-sweety, breakfasts!

At work, a generic egg for breakfast goes for 60 cents apiece. Subsidized, so they say.

Eggs are still a tremendous value! They're a great, inexpensive way to add perfect protein to a diet.

I just got groceries 2 days ago and paid 4.38 for an 18 pack of large eggs.

I used to get that for 2.50. Food prices have been going up far faster than my budget has. :(

Today, I was shopping for relatives at the snootiest grocery store in snootville and bought a few staples for myself. A dozen local, free range, organic, grade A (the shells are different shades and might have speckles, so they're A rather than AA), large eggs were $5.19/doz. Same grower, AA, specialty fed, at Whole Paycheck, less snooty neighborhood, last month were $6.79/doz.

We like cage free brown eggs, large sized and they were almost $5 a dozen last weekend at Wal Mart.

Egg prices have climbed over the past few months because of a bird flu outbreak that has reduced egg production. Even at today's higher prices, eggs are still a bargain for the nutrition provided.

I'm with marcopolo, we also go for jumbos (or x-large if no jumbos are available) from a local family-run ranch that has been supplying my area for decades. Their chickens are fed a strictly vegetarian diet and the operation is completely cage-free. They also have an organic egg line, I'm personally indifferent between the two, we buy either, both taste great. There's simply no comparison between the taste of fresh local eggs from chickens that spend part of the day outside and those that come out of the large industrial producers (and are sold at the discount chains for market low prices). With eggs as with so many other things, you get what you pay for.

Current prices? I`don't know, we buy them no matter what the price because they're good, but I think for marilyn sue you should check prices in local stores. Egg prices tend to be local. Home raised eggs should be more expensive than commercially produced ones people buy in stores, it's a premium product. Do you give them a vegetarian feed? if so, that could command a premium over store eggs too.

$1.99 where I am for large eggs. I have found someone locally who sells cage free, organic eggs from their own hens for $2/dozen right now because they have so many. Usually they are $3/dozen from this person.

We buy organic from the grocery store (about $4.50/dozen) or from a friend with chickens ($2/dozen).

I think the last ones I bought were from Kroger's and were 3.25. I miss having my own chickens. I hate buying eggs. There is a place a couple of towns over that has hens in large fenced areas....on grass, like pastures. I don't know what they get for eggs, but I need to find out. I don't eat eggs by themselves, but I cook with them.

All of my chickens roam free all day. I shut them up at night. They will not be killed to eat when they stop laying, they will just live out their lives in their nice pink chicken house with the white trim :) I give most of our eggs away to friends and family.

Around $4.40 in the stores, but I only buy them on sale, usually $1.99. The Mennonites used to sell them for $2/dozen and now they're $2.75. I just bought my last ones at the farmers market for $3 for extra-large.

Farm fresh eggs are usually $2/dozen here... $3/dozen if the seller thinks they're special. lol! Grocery store prices vary and I don't keep track, but they're often on sale for $.99/dozen.

Marilyn Sue, I loved my chickens, and they were free range during the day and I closed them up during the night. One day I was going to the flea market and driving down I 10 and I passed a pitiful chicken sitting by the road in the middle of no where. I found a place to turn around and went back and got her. She was an old hen who had probably served out her usefulness as a layer and had fallen off a big truck going to a processing plant for cat food, in Alabama, I think. She was a white leghorn and she looked awful....had been de-beaked and she was so pale...comb was pink, not red. I took her home and took care of her. She actually laid a few more eggs. I didn't have a chicken house or pen, so every day, I staked her out by tying a string loosely to her leg. She adapted to it well and liked eating a little grass. I kept her until she died. Actually, I think a raccoon eventually got her, but at least her life was good for a while.

Got an 18 ct. carton of Egglands best at Sam's for $5.12 yesterday. NW Pennsylvania.

That is a cute story Marilyn C. I can remember when my Grandma had a hen that had baby chicks, she would tie a long strip of rag around the hen's leg that was tied to a stake near a little coop with the chicks. They could wander around but not go far and the chicks of course stayed close to the hen.

I needed eggs so just got a dozen extra-large from the local quick-stop and they were $3.29. Definitely up in price!

$3 from the store and $1.50 from a co-worker who has chickens. She doesn't always have enough to spare so sometimes I have to buy from a store. I'm in Wisconsin.

Today I paid $3.59 for Jumbo eggs -- generic, Jewel Food Store label. I doubt I've paid over $3.00 for these before. I wish I could get fresh-from-the-hen house eggs. We have tried various 'organic' eggs and the Egglands brands, but prefer the generics. (Documented by various in-house blind taste tests conducted at Sunday breakfasts, employing over-easy fried eggs, with DH as the unknowing participant.)

I live in Ohio. Just bought 2 dozen extra large eggs at DrugMart for $2.89/doz.
