So, what's going on in your neck of the woods?

A week or so ago, a woman found a 8 foot boa constrictor in her yard. Animal control came and removed it, but has no facilities for a snake. They named him Hercules and found a "foster" home for him until someone claimed him. When they went to reclaim him, the foster parent had sold him on Craigslist for 225.00. The snake is valued at 1,100.00, so the guy is facing grand theft charges. The County re-claimed the snake, but still hasn't found the owner.

I just went into town and it was wild and crazy! I live in a small town (Pop 2000) and everyone really gets into the school sports. Tonight is homecoming and there were kids all over downtown. A bunch of the football players were in the back of a truck parked at our only red light. They were yelling and getting all the cars to honk in support. Very exciting! Looking forward to going to the game. Jammers youngest son is on the team.

Twice this week there have been lots of cop cars up on my town's Main St. Yep, it's called "Main Street". Don't know why they're there. The first time, I drove slowly thru the police-car-gauntlet. The second time, I made a U turn and went a different way. Hey, I'm just doing my grocery shopping.

Everything is bursting into bloom here. The plum trees are in full bloom so the yard smells delicious. The peach tree should start blooming tomorrow. The Mexican plum is budding, so we expect blooms from it in a week or so. The water lilies have new foliage coming out. Lots of wildflowers are in bloom--spring beauties, anemones, bluets, wild garlic, wild onion, bloodroot, henbit, chickweed and others whose name I do not know. Some of the native Chickasaw plums are blooming along a few fencelines in the Thackerville area though not yet blooming along our road a bit further north. Some of the ornamental pears are blooming...either 'Bradfored' or 'Aristocrat' or both. Daffodils are in bloom everywhere, and I saw the first hyacinth blossom yesterday. I haven't seen any redbuds in bloom yet. The iris foliage is up, and lots of herb volunteers like catnip, lemon balm, chamomile, are up. Some of the chamomile plants are on the verge of blooming. The chives are just a handful of days away from blooming. A lot of the trees are getting that fuzzy look you notice from a distance when they're about to bloom or start leafing out. All the winter weeds are growing like mad and we're going to mow them down tomorrow. Down near the river, some of the native willows are leafing out already. The native blackberries have leafed out but haven't bloomed yet. We have honeybees and lady bugs all over the place, and a few butterflies and moths. Tons of birds are everywhere. Lots of frog activity around the ponds. Spring-like weather is here, but I still expect we'll have another freezing night or two at the very least, although I wish we wouldn't. The last few years, because I was sewing quilts until the last minute, I didn't send out any cards! This year, I already got 95% of the cards sent out. Even if I still try to squeeze in some last minute home made gifts, the cards are done and out the door! This year, we are going to the in laws' house for Christmas, so I don't have to do any out of the ordinary house cleaning or decorating. I have yet to wrap any gifts. My parents will have a party this weekend, for those who have to be somewhere else on Christmas. Have to get those gifts wrapped, so I can take them over to the house. Then there are the gifts for relatives who live far away. I am having some gifts sent directly from the online store to the recipient, with gift wrapping. I type a message and it will appear in the card. That is a huge time saver, and perfect for relatives that don't appreciate hand made stuff. I got my hubby some puncture resistant garden gloves that can withstand thorns, for brush clearing at our house. I got a pair for myself, so we can work together. But I also want to get him a CD--Dave Brubeck made a recording in the early 90's--he wrote the music from the Snoopy cartoons that are on TV this time of year. I'm ordered that just now, while I am still online, because hubby has some vacation days coming up, and it'll be hard to get it out of the mailbox and into hiding before he discovers the package. LOL We usually walk to the mailbox together! I am also fixing the zipper on an ancient down parka that hubby wears in the garage during the cold months. The zipper broke and he was wearing it anyway. That has been a real labor of love, since the poor thing is so beaten up I decided that it would be a shame to pay real cash money for the tailor to fix it. I had to hand baste, in order to get all the layers back again, and the zipper where I wanted it. I got so tired one night that I had to stop. It was late, and I was up in front of the sewing machine. I had just sewed a huge fold into the front. I have that ripped out and now I just have to run it through the machine a few more times. But I also will go to the sit & stitch at the LQS today. I need some time to sit with my buddies, and work on my hand applique project--four whig rose blocks sashed with flying geese. That one will look nice on our bed. I am half done with one whig rose block. Gotta run! MaryLiz

It started out cold and sunny but towards evening it kid of clouded up and warmed up too. I walked the Mall today and then also ran some errands. Didn't do much else except cook dinner. Some roses have changed, many are gone and replaced with roses that give me more than I give them. Age has caught up and we've even removed a few of the harder to weed beds. Maybe this coming spring we could do a "do over" with one day here and maybe a day in Asheville or Nashville or Lexington. I'm kind of glad I have more than 15 years of temperature and rainfall records. And I have a volunteer seedling that needs to be shared with other folks who garden in acidic red clay. It's a rambler that just went into its second bloom cycle. Never sprayed, and not really ever fertilized. As I said ...roses that give me more than I give them.

I'm sitting here, watching the Phillies beat LA, and missing my DH. He had to go to training at the other end of the state, got stuck in bumper to bumper traffic on the way home and didn't get in until after dark. Told him to stay home tonight, and come down to the country house tomorrow. I think he's done enough driving for one day.

Otherwise, nothing to exciting happening. I've just spent the past couple of days cleaning up the garden, painting the stoops, lugging a third of an acre's worth of grass clippings to the curb.....

I'm laying low tonight. It's cold and windy again today.

Maryann, that was our town last Friday. We have around 8000 but only one high school. Our entire district (five schools) gets out at noon on Homecoming Friday so they can go to the parade and join in the festivities. The H.S. games always draw a large crowd.

Dh is at work until tomorrow night and the boys have out of town football games tomorrow, so I'm a single mom again.
I'm taking my oldest (13) to the 49er/ Eagles game in San Fran on Sunday. That will be SO much fun!!! I wish I could take my younger son too. The three of us always have fun hanging out. I'm going to try and talk DH in to taking him to the Renaissance fair while we are gone.

Tivy Homecomeing here in our town too. I finished my second chemo today came home and slept all afternoon. My Beloved is going to Austin tomorrow for some car repair maintenance and I think I'll just be hanging around here...recuperating.

Not much going on around here. Must be flu season though, cause I have it...took me by surprise, I normally don't get sick, I leave that up to DH.

I had a strange day last Friday. Was quite a scare that turned out to be quite a pleasure actually. I have some friends that live about 200 miles north of me. He's in his 80s now and his health has been getting worse as time goes on. Poor guy was very active and about 7 years ago he had a freak accident that put him in a wheelchair for most of the time. Anyway, I heard the phone ring and lately I don't even look at the caller ID but the computer was on and I looked at it. The name rang a bell but took a fraction of a second to realize it was Andrea's brother's name and I went oh, no, I could only think of one reason why he'd call and that was that Rodg had died or something. Well I answered and I heard both of them (whew!) and they were in town and wanted to stop over for a bit. They were down for a breakfast with some old co-workers and were going to Eau Claire for an even where he'd be featured. (He's a former television personality.) They both looked better than they have for a long time and we had a nice visit. Nearly an hour and they had to get going. What a joy! It made my week! I haven't seen or heard from them for a long time so it was really nice.

Otherwise, not much exciting going on here.

Had a lousy day at work today, low staff, high census. At least our new manager gives a crap about us and found some help through the day. Didn't get any sleep the last two nights so that made things worse.

We used to have a rabbit in our backyard but I don't know where he went to, now we have a groundhog of all things. He runs under the little porch when he hears us coming. I'm going to have to find out if I can get him trapped and moved. My dd volunteers at the Humane Society so I'm going to ask if they know where I can find a safe trap to borrow.

I found someone to come look at my treadmill, which has been broken for months now. He normally works on appliances only and at first said he doesn't do treadmills, but he took pity on me and is coming next week! If he fixes it, I'm giving him a nice fat tip on top of whatever he charges me.

Expecting our first snowfall this weekend--don't have time for it. Fund raising dinner for the church among many other things.. Pheasant season starts also--would love to stay home--but duty calls

Oh, and gas was $2.87 here in my little town when I got back home tonight!
