chair cushions

i am replacing cushions for cast iron chairs. The existing cushions have a hard (not wood) board on bottom, then the foam, etc. It drops into the chair seat, which has an interior edge it rests on.

Is there a name for that kind of cushion? What is the hardboard bottom piece called?

I need two complete replacements, and they are expensive to have made (had new ones made 12 years ago)

Without a sewing machine, is it possible for me to make simple ones myself? We have the ability to cut the material for the cushion support/bottom.

Or make a base with wood and foam and use a purchased chair 'pad' or cushion?

Are there other alternatives?

Or if you can direct me to a website, book or publication I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

Marie
