It is a navy blue, so don't look at blacks. Try Pittsburgh Paints Celestial Blue or Flower Annie.

Since you have no natural light in the room, have you tried dark navy blues such as Ben Moore Old Navy 2063-10?

Another Vote for BM Old Navy. I used it on my front door.

I do not have any recommendations as you have received some great ones here. All I wanted to say was do not use tricorn black. I tried it on my kitchen cabinets (the island) and it is as black as you can get!

I'd try SW Naval as Tibbrix suggested. I painted my son's room that color. It does look pretty black at night, though, so you may need to go lighter than you think to get the same effect.

thank you all so much for the recommendations. we actually went with the "soot" because i couldn't bear to purchase another paint sample. i've definitely hit renovation fatigue. will post a pic when we have the finished product. i'm hoping what i've heard is correct and lacquered varnish comes out lighter than latex paint.
