Comments (6)Wow! So jealous of all your melons! I've tried in vain to grow them here... even tried a watermelon named after our province (Cream of Saskatchewan) and couldn't get more than a golf ball-size fruit. What's the secret (or do I just need to move to a warmer climate, lol)? Actually, we have masses of bees and wasps here. *runs away* Frogs, toads... they're all good! We have so many they keep me awake some nights with all their croaking. I'm always stopping and restarting the lawnmower to move them out of the way. They supposedly eat lots of bad bugs....See Morejust a couple more pics.lol

Comments (41)Since we've exhausted the landscape fabric topic (I think), I have another suggestion. Your paths need to be wider than 3'. Four feet is the minimum for you and a wheelbarrow - example: an access path to the compost heap, and that's tight. Imagine you are walking along the path with a friend, describing your plants and future plans. You need paths wide enough for two people to walk side-by-side. A garden path needs to be at least six ft, eight ft is is better. From your description of the land and your photos, you have plenty of room to make wider paths. You can make them wider at the same time you widen the curves. You also need wider paths because some of your trees and plants will grow wider than you think and will grow into the paths. I'm not a landscape designer. Nearly everything I've learned is by trial and error and fixing mistakes. For an answer from experts, you may want to take your questions the landscape design forum - it's usually busy so I'm sure they will give you a better answer - http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/design/ They will be intrigued by your project and your screen name!...See Morejust a few random pics from last year
Comments (17)Moccasinlanding, i am embarrassed to say I do not know if that is an English Dogwood .. it was here when we moved in, and I am very very new to any gardening other than mowing the grass. I really have just started to hobby garden 4 years or so ago. Ken, as to that one Great X under the shrubs, I will try to get a early picture of it this year. I thought I bought all five of my plants the same time and place. Also unless my memory fails it looks brighter at first, Anyhow I will try to get some early comparison shots, heck it will be fun to have a photo project for the spring... The funny thing is I had them purchased and in the ground before I found out they can be DIFFICULT, my first thought was DANG ! I really liked that type. So far they have been no problem (it pays to be ignorant) or so they say... I have heard of locals with hundreds of types that can't keep Great Expectations alive, or lose them over a winter. So I just enjoy them and hope for the best... they haven't come up yet ! fingers crossed. This post was edited by leafwatcher on Tue, Mar 19, 13 at 23:44...See More- 8 years ago
