Replace 20 year old furnace and AC units that are working fine?

We are getting bids on a big renovation project on a home we purchased in May. On inspection and from what we have seen, the heater and AC units work fine. The HVAC guy that was bidding on our renovation project recommended that we replace both units because they are 20 years old. My first instinct is to keep both units and use them as long as they are having no problems. We can replace them in the future if needed. Is there any advantage to replacing old units as far as better efficiency? Wondering if running the new units would result in lower energy use and cost savings.

Additional factors: We live in the coastal area of southern California with mild climate so furnace and AC are not heavily used. We aren't actually living in the house until renovations are done, so the HVAC has not been well tested and the units are under home warranty until May 2016.

Should we replace or keep the 20 year old units?
