Blanching squash prior to dehydrating

NCHFP states to use a 4 min. blanch time for 1/4" slices of summer squash before dehydrating. I did the same for my zuchini too, adding citric acid to the water as recommended. Do you all follow this procedure? I found it to be very messy and hard to separate the slices, get them to lay flat, and pat dry, all before going into my solar dehydrator. Just wondering if someone has found a better way that still prepares the squash for dehydration and shelf storage safely.
