They are finally liberated! Update on my Breck's sale roses

They have been under tulle for at least a month. Since it appears that the JBs are gone, I removed the tulle a few days ago. Yesterday I moved them out to my pot ghetto. They look like they are stretching their arms in relief. I finally have pictures!

I have some black spot but am happy. I only lost 6 out of 29 purchased!

A couple started to die back almost immediately and although I cut them back, it just continued. Twilight Zone leafed out and bloomed, then died. Three had tiny roots and just never did anything. But they only cost about $3 each so it was still a good deal.

I'd never heard of garden watchdog - cool site. Thanks for the tip. In the past year Breck's has had 17 negative reviews and 11 positive on that site. I wish I'd known to look there before. You know, I used to sit with my mom and go through the Breck's catalog every year, and we would pick out the bulbs she would order together. It never occurred to me that they wouldn't produce the goods. And in this day of computerized inventories there is no excuse. It's bad enough I'm not getting what I ordered. If they'd just been honest when I placed the order instead of stringing me along with false "future" ship dates, I could have bought bulbs from another company or chosen something they had in stock, and I would have probably ordered from them in the future. Now I'm angry, disappointed, and I've got nothing in the ground. They really are jerks.

Most of the 36 roses in my DA garden are on their own roots ... now that I think of it, I'm pretty sure they all are. Anyway, as of yesterday, there are some pretty stellar performers that aren't talked about much. The star of the show is 'Sir Clough'. It reminds me of 'Carefree Beauty' somewhat, but the foliage is better, the habit is better, and the flowers are a warmer, more pleasing shade of hot pink. Visitors rarely fail to mention that "wonderful dark pink rose in your Austin Garden." 'Comte de Champagne' is beside 'Sir Clough'. It's a soft yellow (similar to Buff Beauty's color), low petal count, cupped flowers, very disease resistant. 'Bow Bells' was planted directly into the garden as a band in October 2011. It is now 5' tall, dense, and super vigorous and healthy. 'Marinette' was planted in 2012, also as a band without nursing it in a pot. Rooted it myself from a cutting. It is doing beautifully. Those are the ones that I can remember off the top of my head. Sometimes, the only way to know that a rose will work for you in your garden under your growing conditions is to just buy it and see what happens. This is how some of my most favorite lucky accidents have happened. Congratulations on your new home!

Honestly, if you get plants shopping to you in the mail, some are definitely always going to die. Spring Hill and Brecks allow you to do the no payment until you're satisfied thing just as a way to move plants they were gonna have to throw out if no one ordered them. If you're not dirt broke, just buy the plants. Some will die, some won't, but you won't be dealing with this nonsense. Plus, any company is pretty likely to work with you until you're satisfied if they ship you something dead. No company that is legitimate should be guaranteeing that anything at all with definitely grow in your yard. People plant poorly, water poorly, fertilize poorly, it doesn't make any business sense to make yourself liable for that, unless you have a system for ignoring actual complaints and sending folks to collections. 🤷

I received my 3 DAs from Wayside Gardens (last day sale) yesterday, planted them today after soaked them over night. Just received 2 bare root rose trees from JP today (ordered on their last day sale after 11:00pm :-), I was just testing them out, didn't think the order could go through). I have been watering all my newly planted bare root roses everyday. Helen, What's the temp in CA? You might need shade and a lot of water for those bare root DAs. What are the names of your DAs? I got Gentle Hermione, Olivia and Heathcliff.

My Twilight Zone did the same thing. It leafed out and had a couple of promising stems then the leaves just curled up and it was gone. I lost three right out of the box. They were almost brown to begin with but within a couple of weeks all the green was gone.

Of the 24 I bought I lost 7 all together. 4 of those were ones I paid extra for so they gave me a credit for them. Some are growing faster than others but blooms are weak because of the heat. This fall I hope I get nice flushes from them and I'll post pictures of them.

No, I don't spray. There is some black spot but otherwise look good.

They look very happy! Mine are still in the shade because the sun is brutal! Only lost one out of 12.

yes, mine were in part shade until yesterday. It's not quite as hot as it was so I moved them out to full sun. The only shade I have it in front of my door to the basement so I needed to move them as I need the room for some cuttings I rooted and other plants.

I lost 2 out of the 15 I got. all A Twitter and Ayanna Dabba Do (which was a repeat so I actually ended up with one either way. My Bella Roma was looking bad at first and I thought it would die, but it made it and although small, is growing actively. :). Out of all the ones I got my favorites are Royal Amethyst (it's like an improved version of Angle Face) , Crescendo, and Happy go Lucky.

All A Twitter was one that I lost! The other has been blooming since July. Both my Royal Amethyst kicked the bucket after leafing out, one even had buds! The other two were a Bella Roma and Cape Diamond.

Aww, I'm sorry to hear that CG. I really like my Royal Amethyst. But you still got some great ones and for the price, I can't complain. I didn't even contact Breck's about the ones I lost, I got such a good deal and really a good survival rate considering I started them so late. I'm extremely happy with the entire thing. I hope they have it again next year :)

well, I have another one of each of them. I am impressed with the Cape Diamond and the AAT. I didn't get a good picture of their blooms.
