I'm eager for it to dry out so I can fertilize it lol. Maybe I'll mix in some granules while the soil/gravel is still wet. Nah, that sounds like a terrible idea!

Do you guys think it'll be okay if I let it dry out? Maybe I'll start watering a bit less. I told my husband when the outside of the clay pot is all the way dry, he can water it. Unfortunately it was spotty colored yesterday, so he watered it today. Then it rained. He didn't bring it inside or tell me he watered it until I thought "well, it's rained enough to bring in the Pachypodium and Adenium."

I'm chuckling at *le sigh*. That brought me back to Pepé Le Pew.

Honestly, I can't remember. Probably composted bark mulch, lots of perlite and chick grit and chicken grit. I'll have to remove the top dressing to see if maybe it's holding too much water from the bark compost. There's also some raised bed "soil mender" in there and some coco coir. I'm pretty sure my drainage and aeration proportions were good at the time, but I've been wrong before. I put the top dressing on thick to encourage a thick root to go down into the substrate below so it can thicken and hopefully give me a nice root to expose as time goes on, while I raise the caudex above ground.

I'm assuming this is the right thing to do. I'll chalk my soil first.

Should I be concerned about the yellowing of the caudex? Do you think that's from the sun or from being kept too wet?

Does my watering regime sound like a good plan? With such a thick layer of grit around it, it's hard to stick my finger in and check the way I usually do. It had been really hot and it spent about a week or two outside (clipped) before I put it in full sun all day.

I haven't been turning it as I should, so the branching may be one sided. Not sure if that's where I wanna go with it or not. The wind-swept look. It's very typical to see trees in Oklahoma grow in this diagonal fashion from the wind.

My Cherokee Purple tomatoes vine grew that way then the central stalk split between the two vines.

Why are some leaves wrinkly/wavy? They also look drab and not bright green. This can't be sunburn, (right?) they grew out in full sun?

Okay, I think these five adequately show all the sides. That little nub in front has the larger branch you see growing as well as a smaller one growing below the cut.

You know, I read that wiki about Pepe Lepew and I have to say. I'm a little bit alarmed.

It has Penelope Pussycat listed as his significant other but every time I watched that show, she was not a willing participant and that's what restraining orders are for and that is not love it is sick. No wonder we're all so messed up in a patriarchal society that womens' only value is scaled by a false Beauty Myth which turns women into objects and dehumanizing them.

Apparently, according to that cartoon, the girl doesn't have the authority to say "no". I've only heard that one other time.

Oh there were so many things confusing about that show, laticauda. For starters, I was so young I had no idea what "French" was or that such things as skunks existed. I did grow up with cats though and wondered why that particular one did not go Tasmanian Devil on Pepe Le Pew since I knew cats vanish into a blur when miffed.

P.S. Now, on the subject of grafts, I have this one rescued from a pan of water at Lowe's:

V-grafts are the easiest but they tend to go haywire over time. This one, though, I like a lot. Flat grafts tend to even out faster.

So that's what I have to look forward to?

my yard guy came today and was talking about bonsai. He said "they cut them back real hard then the plant gets angry and starts growing a lot out of the top." H'okay. That's a paraphrase.

maybe I could bind the graft to prevent that bulging. (You know, the way they used to cruelly bind little girls' feet in imperial China.)

but I've seen a tree grow into/around a motorcycle, so it's probably not cruel to the plant. Someone should ask the plants, though, for sure.

It wont necessarily happen to that graft, but it can. Even if it does, that can also be somewhat attractive. It's the reason I bought this plant, in fact. I liked the look. Here is the whole thing:

Sunburn on adeniums is unmistakable--the leaves are literally bleached almost white.

If you're really worried, dig the mother out, inspect the roots and examine your substrate. Or, since it's almost September, you can wait until the spring then dig it out.

i don't mean sunburnt leaves they all grew out in full sun, I mean the caudex that's above ground. I just reported it a few weeks ago, like a couple days before I cut it, so I don't think now is a good time for a root inspection, no?

If it's firm and not spongy or mushy, I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep an eye on it, in case it gets worse, although I think it's nothing.

I also confess that I dig out, prune, graft and repot my plants regardless of the time of the year. It's really just a matter of having a spot to put them in where they can recover---hot, humid and brightly-lit. Sometimes they are in and out of pots for root inspection several times a year, often simply because I was curious. In fact this summer is the first that any of them has ever had when I've been too preoccupied to bother them. They're really not that delicate and they recover quickly, as long as you are willing to interrupt their growth.

Fun plants! Try doing that to an adromischus.

what do you suppose caused that bulbous formation right there? Cutting the scion too low and getting some caudex cells in there that encourages bulbous growth?

i have a branch forming right above the graft line, I'm excited to see how it turns out, should be interesting. Hopefully it's not the base plant masquerading as a scion branch.

I doubt it was intentional. My guess is that the scion did not fully attach to the stock and expanded into that space. Scions are normally cut from branches of proven plants so the piece would have been far from the trunk. But who knows?

that is what fakechuchi's plant looks like! Almost like a leprechaun.

when I potted this one, the caudex has an upside down U recess in it like the causes is actually two smaller bulbous parts connected at the top.

maybe it'll be cool looking depending on how things go down there the next half year or so.

Just an update, I have flower buds forming....well, at least one hahaha.

I'll try to get pictures later...hopefully when they are blooming.
