8 years agoThanks so much for that response. I had my heart set on that tree, but I don't want to make the mistake of getting something too broad. I kind of don't want the "spire" look...I have 12 arborvitae (sorry don't remember which ones) in my back yard to create a privacy curtain on each side. (so I think I'm sated on that) I've left the back open because it looks out on a grassy common area that makes things feel a little more spacious. Anyway, I will attach a picture of the spot. My lot line is where you see the Arborvitae begin. (actually I think they encroach into the easement). It's the east side of the house, so lots of sun until afternoon, and nothing will be built any closer to block it. Since I don't want the "spire" look, I'm guessing I will just end up with small shrubs and plants.
I'm also on the hunt for a deciduous tree to plant in front of my house (south). There is more space there obviously but it will probably be planted only 12-15 feet from the house. I already have a Japanese Maple (Crimson Queen) on the other side of the front lawn and have plenty of red and crimson plants in front. I would love to have something GREEN, I live in zone 5b and the spot is full sun, all day. I'm told paperbark maple needs some shade and a coral bark maple won't tolerate our winters. (I have a Kousa Dogwood and a Red Maples planted in back.) Any suggestions?

Comments (5)Spruce is not the greatest for salt tolerance. Juniper is better, or tamarack/larch. There are two kinds of salt problems, salt in the soil from road runoff, and salt spray from slushy roads and snow blowers. Tolerance for one does not mean tolerance for the other. Lots of info. online about what species of tree tolerates which condition. Consult that first before deciding on a species. Lastly, lots of organic material in the soil helps counteract salt IN the soil. But it is not a miracle worker. A berm will probably help deter salty runoff if done properly with that in mind. Comments (11)I would leave it for at least 2-3 years as it may sort itself out on its own (I was doubful this would, but it did). This used to have 2 leaders. When you wait until late Nov. for 50% off, you often end up with “weirder the better” material. This sorted itself out on its own. Its in a wet location (P. Pungens to right is in very wet spot and planted too low hence lower branches dying). Perhaps this helped sort it out (more quickly). The dwarf Alberta spruce to its left is reverting. Comments (7)i had 2 also ... one i made sure it grew straight up ... bought it that way ... the other ... it was impossible to straighten it ... so i let that leader weep down.. and eventually another leader popped out of the bend.. atypical dominance at its best .... and i allowed it to go upwards ... as i said.. its not going to be easy to straighten this one.. because of the heft of the trunk itself... now.. that said.. ask yourself.. do they all have to look the same??? ... that might be a personal problem.. rather than a tree problem... lol ... when i had a national garden tour come thru.. most peeps werent interested in the same old same old perfectly grown to specs plants ... they were enthralled by the weirdos ... lol ... which were usually the result of some historical damage... well grown out .. rather than some bizarre pruning goal/method .. to get them into the exotic shape ... ken...See MoreDying Weeping White Spruce
Comments (10)It could also be a very similar looking fungal disease called stigmina needle cast, but you’d need a 10x hand magnifier to truly observe the difference. A local horticulturist in the area would give you an accurate diagnosis and the best treatment options, but that service may come at a cost. In a mature tree, treatment of both needle cast diseases would be worthwhile, but often that involves using a specific pesticide and up to three years of spray-treatment to prevent further infection and spores spreading. Personally, with your spruce being so young (and already looking severely infected), I would remove it to protect the rest of the surrounding area. If you decide to remove it, make sure any needles or branches that fall off are also disposed of as those will also contain spores (either hot composting or burning). Definitely send the photos and mention both needle cast diseases, hopefully the nursery has someone on-site who can confirm or properly diagnosis it....See More

8 years agoPaperbark maple will do great in full sun. I'm in zone 5b in IL and have planted numerous ones over the past decade. It's hot here in the summer and very-very sunny.
This is one I planted in 2002 in full sun from a 5-gallon pot.
Acer triflorum is also a beautiful maple with exfoliating bark. If you're going to buy either of these trees locally, I'd suggest you wait until they're fall color can be seen (at the nursery) and choose your tree then.
