Dying Weeping Spruce
Comments (13)All of the mites are dead; from what I can see anyway. I've been keeping a close on it. The infestation happened fast at when it did it was huge! I had ants and wasps going after them. I sprayed the tree with water to remove the mites but some dead still remain. As far as fungas, I don't see typical signs ie. white or black dots on the back of the needles....See MoreLocation for White Weeping Spruce
Comments (11)Thanks so much for that response. I had my heart set on that tree, but I don't want to make the mistake of getting something too broad. I kind of don't want the "spire" look...I have 12 arborvitae (sorry don't remember which ones) in my back yard to create a privacy curtain on each side. (so I think I'm sated on that) I've left the back open because it looks out on a grassy common area that makes things feel a little more spacious. Anyway, I will attach a picture of the spot. My lot line is where you see the Arborvitae begin. (actually I think they encroach into the easement). It's the east side of the house, so lots of sun until afternoon, and nothing will be built any closer to block it. Since I don't want the "spire" look, I'm guessing I will just end up with small shrubs and plants. I'm also on the hunt for a deciduous tree to plant in front of my house (south). There is more space there obviously but it will probably be planted only 12-15 feet from the house. I already have a Japanese Maple (Crimson Queen) on the other side of the front lawn and have plenty of red and crimson plants in front. I would love to have something GREEN, I live in zone 5b and the spot is full sun, all day. I'm told paperbark maple needs some shade and a coral bark maple won't tolerate our winters. (I have a Kousa Dogwood and a Red Maples planted in back.) Any suggestions?...See MoreParking Lot Salt Concerns for Weeping White Spruce
Comments (5)Spruce is not the greatest for salt tolerance. Juniper is better, or tamarack/larch. There are two kinds of salt problems, salt in the soil from road runoff, and salt spray from slushy roads and snow blowers. Tolerance for one does not mean tolerance for the other. Lots of info. online about what species of tree tolerates which condition. Consult that first before deciding on a species. Lastly, lots of organic material in the soil helps counteract salt IN the soil. But it is not a miracle worker. A berm will probably help deter salty runoff if done properly with that in mind. Good you are thinking about this in advance!...See MoreWeeping white spruce dropping needles
Comments (6)I think cutting back (still once a week if no/minimal rain, just less, maybe 50-60% as much) on watering could help a bit. Ive got three, two are doing well, the third (in the wettest location) not so much/a lot more needle loss than yours. It is not an “all other variables held constant” experiment though as the wettest location is also the shadiest. Having said that, I probably have the wettest land of anyone on here and one very clear general observation I have made (for basically all conifers) is that wet locations/too much water = needle loss. Plus the temps are cooling so less water will evaporate. My water wasnt even hooked up this year so nothing got watered....See MoreUser
