B.luxurians--is this just heat stress?

My several plants of this species were going great guns up until 2 weeks ago. The promising new growth has leaves that remain rolled into tubes, and twisted, shown in the picture. This coincided with the hottest 2 weeks of the year here in SE CT. The plants get watered adequately.

These plants have been moved to an area that's very shady and cool, hoping this will restore normal growth. Any suggestions? Is it heat stress? Will the leaves flatten out again? Have you experienced this in your begonias?

How is it doing now? Did it improve with the move? I keep two of mine in shade and one in part shade/full sun in the afternoon. I'd say yours looks pretty good. In CA, they grow upwards ten - twelve feet tall. I prefer them shorter so you can actually see the foliage and blooms (if and when that happens). FB Planet Begonia had a very nice squat one a few weeks ago which was the best one I've seen (in pictures or in person).

They seem to be improving a little, but they're not quite 'there' yet. The leaves are very slow to lose that tubular shape. What time of year do these usually flower?

I wasn't able to access the picture via your link. :-/

Thanks so much... I've only clipped off the ends of stems to see if they seem alive, but I'll check the lower stems and roots and see how they look. I guess since they're covered under the guarantee, I can at least cut my losses, but I feel guilty doing that (even though I did everything I could to make sure they survived).

Right now your grapefruit tree is getting 16 gallons of water per week. While this quantity may be OK, I think your application could be adjusted a bit. Citrus (and most trees) like to be watered deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry a little in between applications (like wrung out sponge dry, not totally dry). This allows oxygen to return to the soil which is critical for the absorption of nutrients. A better strategy would be to apply the entire 16 gallons during one cycle, waiting 5 - 6 days and watering again. Adding a 3 inch layer of organic mulch in the basin under your tree will keep roots cool and slow evaporation so you don't need to water as often. Plus, as it decomposes it returns nutrients to the soil. Depending on the size of your tree you may need to apply more water. Coastal Redwoods do fine in the interior part of the state. They require irrigation. If they are in, or adjacent to a lawn or garden with regular irrigation, they should be fine. They appear to be moderately drought tolerant where temperatures seldom exceed the mid-90s, but there could be an abundance of water in the ground where I see them growing on dry ridges. I had about 30 rooted cuttings in 1-gallon pots during the 1996 heatwave in Fresno. In direct sunlight and a few days around 110Âº, I think I had about five die because the pots got too hot. I tend to think this last heatwave could have dehydrated the foliage, cauing needle-fall, but if the tree had moisture, I think it would recover from any damage.

I think there are a couple of factors involved here when it comes down to the wilting of figs. 1.) If the fig was recently planted/transplanted, it may take a bit before it is really rooted in. 2.) Many of grow our figs on the south sides of our homes and this is a very hot exposure (getting a lot of reflected heat off the building--especially brick). I noticed that my Petite Negrone which I recently moved from a large container into the ground (on the south side of the house), wilts daily now. Yes, there was a period of 95-100 but even in the upper 80's it is doing this. My two Brown Turkey figs which were in the ground but were also moved are fine and don't wilt one bit well away from the house. The Brown Turkey figs border a fence and get mostly morning and midday sun (but not late afternoon sun).

You might have to become a member of Planet Begonia but then the owner of it probably closed it for any new members (kind of weird?)

I have never had mine bloom and I am on my 3rd or 4th year. Flowers are not that impressive since they are tiny. The umbels may be somewhat impressive if the plant gets big enough to support it. I am pretty sure I have a photo of one about 12 feet tall with bloom in San Francisco on this forum. Anyhow it will bloom when it feels like the conditions are right...
