Creating a "bowl" with potted plants?

I want to create a bowl/planter of several plants, but I'm wondering if you all may have some suggestions on doing and leaving the plants in their plastic starter pots. I understand that the plastic pots aren't the most healthy and this will only be a temporary thing, but I'm not sure if I'm just being hopeful, or if this can work?

Also, if it will work, what have you successfully used for "filling"? Gritty mix?

I plan to repot the plants into gritty mix anyway, just wondering if there's a cheaper or easier filling solution.

If it helps, it will be haworthias (different varieties).

Firstly, don't use a bowl with no drain hole. You will only be asking for trouble. Secondly, you don't HAVE to use gritty mix, I have very few of my plants in it, but the mix has to be well draining. A mix of equal parts potting soil and perlite would work also. Good luck.

Thanks Christopher. After killing way too many plants, I am all about drainage holes LOL!

It may well be plaster, Billie. As I was fumbling through the description of the material, I kept thinking about spackling an interior wall....mesh, plaster, etc. Earlier today, I was thinking about how it would even hold up in a week of rain, if it is not supposed to be soake. I'm disappointed, but it is probably not a good investment of 85 dollars. The base is clearly ceramic, and there is a much smaller bowl in same design that is ceramic. I'm imagining, however, that the glue and finish that holds the mosaic finish are not waterproof. Thanks for the caution and advice. \ Can you think of a way to "waterproof" such a sealent? marie

The rocks on the bottom are large, and more for holding the large rock that the tree's are sitting on above the rim of the bowl. aswell as drain hole covers. I dislike the plastic mesh. The rocks are large enough to baracade soil from washing out, but they still will let access watter seep from the bowl. I was thinking that the chemicals from the sealer i used to protect the bowl might be harmfull so i was curious about applying bees wax, or some other natural substance to the inside. To further protect the bowl. and more importantly the roots of my trees.

If your plants are only 3 inches tall and are planted in 35 qts of soil then your soil is likely sucking up all the water that your roots should be. Some might tell you that you are going to run into problems with standing water, which could lead to fungal diseases. I think you can make it work, just keep in mind that you don't need to saturate all the soil right now, so seeing water run through is not necessary for now. Another suggestion would be to put a wick in one of the holes you drilled. This would probably be a good solution for you, especially since it's already suspended above the ground. Also, what kind of soil are we talking about? Potting soil or soil you dug up from your garden? The latter will not work in a container because it will become compacted.

Thank you too. Personally, I prefer one plant per pot. Less chance for error.

Haws can have pretty different growth rates. I would try to match growth rates among the different species or one plant will dominant the community pot. Haws love aggregate media.

I stuck some succulent cuttings in a wooden crate and they love it. He right about one dominant the prickly pear has three parts now and every one else is still putting in roots
