From the 'Things I Didn't Know about England' File: Royal Swan Upping

A young friend of mine was talking about people she knew who were in the business of tearing down "old" houses in the hills and building new ones. "Old" being defined here as 1960's. Swan Upping is merely a tradition, rather than an edifice, and has been going on since the 1100's! It involves ceremonial titles, actual science, ancient guilds, and folks who just want a good excuse to row around on a Summer's day. Only in England.
