CCleaner?

Any tips, caution, warnings about CCleaner? My old Gateway with Windows 7 and Firefox 39 starts very, very, very slow. Usually, though not always. I have few speed complaints the rest of the day. I have done all the boiler plate recommendations, anti spyware, disk cleanup, power off sort of things.

Is a registry cleaner indicated?

Unless you have expertise use it only at default settings.

You should leave the registry tool alone unless, once again, you have expertise. If you must use the registry tool be sure to create the offered backup. But before doing any registry action, read the Help as to how to restore the backup.

Since it is used at default settings and does not require preferences I recommend a removal of the prior version before installing. It only takes a minute and there is no reboot required. I, OTOH, make sure that CC doesn't delete my more important cookies. Under Options > Cookies I have cookies for my frequently visited sites (forums, email services, etc.) saved so they don't get washed away with the junk cookies. For this reason I just do an upgrade. An uninstall/re-install would erase all saved cookies, right ?

Try it from the link below , choose save when the window opens and save the file to the desktop, then double click it to install Cleaner. That error you're getting is an Internet explorer error, you would need to change the security settings in the browser to medium. Lets see if this works first. Read this article from PCWorld - or only the first paragraph to give you an idea of this very useful program. It has been around quite a while and I have seen no adverse comments on the program. Jut be sure to use it at the default settings and you will not go wrong. This is a free program, you can get it here, or a download source of your choosing.

Windows Update had nothing to do with it. You may have accidentally downloaded it to some other location on your computer. As long as you didn't interrupt the download, it should be there somewhere. If you try to download it again, pay close attention to where it says it's going to be saved. For reasons too complex to explain, downloads can go to different locations; you can always change this before the download starts, but you should never assume a download is going to the "usual" location. You need to carefully check the download location before clicking on the save button.

I did the same boiler plate things as you did as a friend was having a terrifically slow laptop. Win7. She took the system back to factory default. Still slow. Lotsa empty hard drive space. CCleaner didn't speed things up either. Updating drivers did nothing.

So I typed config.sys in the box that appears when you left click Start.

Clicked on System Configuration that appeared and clicked Startup tab in the new box. Unchecked (disabled) several unused items. Had to google several of them to learn if they were needed. Her system is back to normal speed.
