problems w/remnants of free Avast after removal

Just removed Avast from win xp sp3 and installed Bitfinder free. Used Revo unstaller and

got what I thought was a thorough removal. Task manager shows that AvastSvc.exe still exists and is using loads of Cpu. I can't restore to an earlier time the restore function is not

accessible in sys. tools, nor do I have a search function in windows explorer. I've kept this comp. up to date w/ all updates.

Try Avast's removal procedure/tool linked below. It should take care of the problem. It's always best to use the program tools of the program builder when they're available. Good luck, Gringo.

Azinoh "Maybe we had different download sites?" That's possible. I downloaded directly from www.avast.com. If you did not, who knows what you actually downloaded. Could possibly have something to do with your very slow download also. ========================== Sunday 04-13: My version is 2014.9.0.2013 and now there is a new; 2014.9.0.2016. Well updating from the interface update just didn't seem to go so I went to the Avast.com site to download the dot.exe file. Clicking on download takes you to CNET. I now realize my original download was therefore thru CNET. So much for getting Avast from Avast. From Google it would seem cnet hasn't got the best of reputations any more in fact lots of complaints about extra programs foisted off on ya. Guess so. I went to File Hippo for the 84.55M file. Then googled that and there seems to be problems with the 2014.9.0.2016 version. So I'll skip it for now. Maybe let it age a bit. FH seems to have a good rep but most mssgs I found about them were several years old.

I had the exact same problem when I renewed my Avast subscription 3 days ago. It says "Missing runtime error" Or something like that. Went to Staples and they messed with it for over an hour and couldn't fix it. Finally took it to a friend who is a computer geek and as soon as I told him about installing the Avast, he knew what it was. It has something to do with the Firewall of the new Avast. He had to reset it to allow things to work. I know nothing about computers but maybe that's enough info to help you.

abreeze has there been any other antivirus on that pc at all prior to your trying to install AVAST? did it come pre loaded with anything? It really sounds like it is having a conflict and that happens most often with remnants of a prior AV on the pc. AVIRA is a good product, it does have a nag screen but there is a way to stop that if you can do a little googling for it. I am having a HARD time of it!------I DL'ed about 4 times, each taking 5-6 hours to do so and still can't get an old version of what I want. zep516 (My Page) on Thu, Nov 14, 13 at 14:50 I'd do a manual up date, as in download them, that may solve the issue with Avast, Here is a link that might be useful: manual up date Avast When I went there and clicked on the Updates for Version 5-8 (middle row) it DL'ed Version 4.8.0.0. Isn't that a too old of a version? I then went to "filehippo" and clicked on different older versions from there and it always DL'ed the 2014 one I do NOT want as people are having a lot of trouble with it! I want 7.0.1474 as I am embarassed to say I have 6.0.1497 here on my windows XP and wanted to stay close just to get it working till I read up on a safe one to DL that does not cause a lot of problems. HELP! Also--------Does a person have to worry about the Removal Tool taking something off that may screw up my computer or does it only take what Avast put on in the first place and only avast? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks again Anne_ct. I did give it a shot and it worked. Got rid of all avast leftovers. I still have lots of problems. Have decided to use the recovery partition option. I did this once in 2010 by using ctrl+F11 keys. Worked fine until a few days ago after removing avast. I get no response now using those same keys. Any thoughts on this? Neither do I have the search option or system restore. Tried it all in safe mode also.

I'm not sure I understand the problem, Gringo. Are you saying that the recovery partition/reserve is completely gone from your system? That it was accidentally removed/deleted?

Off the top of my head here are a few of thoughts.

> Perhaps the hard drive is failing. If that's the case...back up your system asap and get a new hard drive.

> If the hard drive is OK...the only way I know to get the recovery partition back is to do a reinstall of your operating system...from scratch. If this is required...again...back up to a disk whatever you want of your existing system because a reinstall will return your system to what it was when it came out of the proverbial box.

> You can try sfc. /scannow from Command Prompt as Administrator. It might help but I don't give much hope for it. However...the end result of this type of scan might give you an answer...or a clue...as to what's wrong and why it disappeared.

If you get more facts...please post them. I doubt that this problem had anything to do with Avast but I wasn't looking over your shoulder over the last several days when you've been dealing with the Avast issue. Translation...I don't know what you did before you ran the Avast tool I posted.

I'm not sure what you mean by partition recovery. Recall that when you execute a restore, the operating system will reset to the condition matching the date when the restore file was made. If the restore point was made before installation of new software or updates, those will be lost because the system returns to its condition at the time the restore file was made. There can be more than one restore file, each identified by the date of creation and file name. Be careful about which one you chose.

Thank you both anne_ct and jemdandy for your help and suggestions; most helpful. However; the final solution was to use the ctrl+F11 keys at start up and before the Windows logo. This activated the system recovery mode. Reinstalled Win xp to new condition. Brought all the updates to current time. Then installed Norton anti virus furnished by my IP at no extra cost.

Working like new for now............
