You're in the UK, right? How's the weather been and have you been spraying your rose with anything?

Yes I'm in the UK! The weather has been up and down, but noticed when all the leaves were gone it was quite warm at the time, it only had a rose on it. It has been hot and cold recently too so I don't know if it's that. I haven't sprayed it with anything either, so I know it's nothing to do with chemicals.

Poor little thing used all its Energy to put out the Rose.

Is the soil compacted.

It needs a little afternoon shade and mist now.

All the leaves don't just fall off. Look for signs of chewing damage (deer?). If the leaves turned yellow with dark spots before falling, it was blackspot fungus. But I don't see a lot of leaves on the ground, so probably someone ate them.

Yeah, it had some leaves on it before and it was quite full before. When the rose came out there were leaves still on the rose, it's only afterwards I noticed the leaves were all gone and there were only one rose on it. Maybe you're right and it used up all its energy. The soil seems fine to me, it does get quite a bit of shade as there is a big tree behind it, I have been watering it once every few days.

Lool it certainly ain't a deer as they're definitely none round where I live. I cleaned up the area last week so no leaves on the floor now, but the leaves were yellow and I think they did have some blackspots actually. I didn't remember seeing any bite marks on the leaves, but I'm thinking if it's an animal biting the leaves it could be cats as I have been having problems with them in the garden. Or snails and slugs as some of my other plants have been really damaged by them, some even bitten to the ground by them.

Roses need morning sun and at least 6 hours. I hope it recovers before it gets artificially pruned again from whatever. I think it got too much water.

Oh ok, the place where it is, is quite shady so maybe that could be the problem. Sunlight does get around that area, but not as much as the rest of the garden. I'm thinking of moving it somewhere else, but the only problem is that my whole garden is full and there's no other place it can really go. Leaves are growing back on it again, so I hope it recovers too.

Now is not a good time to move it. Winter or early spring is better.

I went through that with a little rose rooted cutting and moved it and its a foot high 3 years later.

Leaves don't drop because a rose plant ran out of energy. It sounds like blackspot disease may have killed the leaves. Look up pictures online so you can recognize blackspot. Many roses are highly susceptible and can't be grown well without regular fungicide.

But most roses do need 5+ hours of sun to grow and bloom well..

I had a rose look like this after a young rabbit got a hold of it. Looked as though Mme Bunny had sucked the leaves off the bush. I caught her eating, so I could compare the damage to the part she had yet to eat.

I've had leaves all come off because of rabbits...

Ok I won't move it! I was thinking about cutting the tree before, but just not right now though. I'll do it soon though as it has gotten too big now and blocking a lot of sunlight coming that way. I've just looked at the blackspots disease and it looks exactly the u think so it must be that. What can I do to stop it happening again? It's definitely not rabbits lol as where I live there are no wild rabbits, the only thing that comes in my garden are cats or snails and slugs. Jim I hope you rose recovers too!

keithog, I have a no spray garden in which I only plant disease resistant roses for my area... That's how I handle Blackspot these days...

You can provide your rose bush with the proper amount of direct sun 6+ hours and see what happens. Basically ignore it or pull off infected leaves when you first see the blackspot disease.

And,

There are other ways to stop Blackspot but I'll let someone else answer as I firmly to not believe in those methods nor will I recommend them.

Thanks Jim for the information, the rose is starting to get new leaves now and it looks much healthier. Right now it's raining and has been for the whole day so it's got a lot of watering today. I quickly took some pics of it.

I think you don't need an American telling you how to grow roses.

Maybe a aerated compost tea using the Elaine Ingham method.

The picture is hard to tell.

I just worry about people stepping there.

I little circle to protect it and some coffee grounds would be a good treat.

Prune the other plants reaching in its space.

I hope you can trim the tree to give the rose morning sun. That would dry the leaves before disease sets in.

Keithog, are you a tea drinker? In my no spray garden in blackspot USA, I have had good results preventing blackspot by putting my used tea leaves in a layer under my roses. The fungus is in the soil and splashes up onto leaves, so tea is a layer between the fungus and the plant, as I understand this. (I am confident someone more knowledgeable will correct any misinformation. ) I brew a pot of loose black tea each morning, and sluice out my pot into a plastic pitcher when tea is gone. I pour/spread the tea debris under the splash line of my roses. Sometimes in evening I brew rooibos tea and do the same with those dregs. The tea does not prevent water or liquid fertilizers from getting to the roots, is not unattractive (especially compared to naked canes from blackspot!), and is free!

Thanks guys for the answers! Yeah there are new leaves growing on it now and they look healthy so that's a good sign. Yes I drink tea and coffee, I've never heard of doing that before, so will do that method and hopefully the rose won't get sick again, I'll let you know how I get on. Yes I will try and give the tree behind it a good cut as it blocks a lot of the sunlight, although sunlight does get around the area. Also I was thinking if it could be cat pee that cause the damage? Cats have been spraying around that area and I heard their pee is quite toxic to plants. Sam I forgot this site is not only in the UK loool!

Me, too! I suspect coffee grounds might work, too, if that's your bev of choice. I also knew someone who had access to cocoa bean shells? I guess they are shells, and put those under plants to deter slugs, snails, etc.

Please do not use cocoa mulch in your flower beds. Dogs will eat it and it is potentially lethal for them.

Thanks Jim, I'll try all the methods I've been given on here and see which one works best! I got the same rose at the front and it looks better, but I've noticed some of the stems have been turning brown and look like it's dying

Hi Keithog - The dark brown and blackened and yellowing stems are obviously dying canes and need to be pruned off as you have been doing, all the way down to healthy cane (creamy to tan interior after you cut) or if necessary to the graft, if you have one. As to why it's happening, it can be a multitude of things. In my zone, it tends to be canker, which is a disease that spreads down a cane and kills it, often from an injury but sometimes just to be ornery, as far as I can tell. I get this frequently on new bare-root or potted roses that have been under someone else's care, and I call this the "black finger of death". For those of us in cold climates, the damage is often winter kill, and you can get delayed death from winter kill well into late summer in my experience. There are times an established rose will just decide to abandon some canes in "rose cane suicide" for no reason I can tell.

The only solution I know is to keep ahead of it and prune under the damage, making sure your pruners are cleaned with alcohol or other disinfectant wipes. That means doing periodic inspections of my roses checking for sneaky cane death and those yellowing canes that says the cane is on the way out, even if there are still temporarily green leaves at the end having one last gasp.

Hi Keith, just wondering, how is your other rose doing (the one with the long cane that you cut the top of?). Progress report would be nice.

Just wanted to remind you that when you prune, make sure you disinfect your pruners after each cut so you don't spread disease/fungus/bacteria to the other canes. I use the 90% alcohol and the spray top of an old bottle (it screws on good).

Are you getting a lot of rain? The rose looks very hydrated, and sometimes too much moisture encourages bad things to happen.

You could see the top 1/3rd of the cane was turning yellow back in the first picture. So if you live in a place with mild winter. I would suspect a root problem is causing the death

Thanks guys for your answers! I live in England so the winters can get pretty cold here, so that could be the problem. It wasn't doing well before so I pruned all the bad bits and it was growing quite nicely, now I see the brown canes again. I'll make sure the clippers are clean before I cut the bad bits. Roses don't seem to be doing too well in my garden this year, only one. There's another rose in my garden and the canes are turning black, and all the leaves have fallen off, must be my area lol.

Hi msdorkgirl, sorry lol, sadly the rose hasn't made any progress and looks exactly the same as when I cut it. No new canes or stems have come out on it and the small green cane at the bottom had some new sprouts, but they have turned brown now. I might have to just yank it up and replace it with a new one, I shouldn't of listened to that person that told me to cut it right down!

I don't believe it was mentioned above, but when roses get more sunshine, they tend to have fewer diseases (like blackspot) and tend to bloom more. Definitely give that tree a drastic pruning to let in lots of sun, or move the rose to a spot where it will get 6 hrs a day of sun--or more!

Yeah you're right that's probably why too. I got another rose around that area too and it's got quite big so I think that was taking a lot of the sunlight too. I tried to cut down the tree a bit, but it's too tall so I will have to get one of those electric cutters to cut it. I was going to move it to another place, but was told it wouldn't be best to do it now. Yeah lol I'm not giving up on it unless it's too late lol, I was meant to use the compost tea, but forgot to put it down so when I have a cup of tea I'll remember to keep the bags to put down around there.

Keith compost is underneath the leave pile. Or your city has it for free . Your rose needs a little compost. An inch or so mixed into the top inch of the soil. Each Year is good.

My roses have lost some leaves as well this year from black spot but they are recovering now!

Compost is very easy to make as well Keith! I've done several ways but the tidiest is with an old trash can with holes in it for air and drainage!

The rose seems to be doing quite well so hopefully it'll stay that way. More fresh leaves are sprouting back on it. Roses have not been doing too well in my hardens lol!
