Some Roses need cold. They go dormant. They have to go through a winter dormancy. The rose you got is probably grown in Columbia. Your rose is a decendant of a china rose that doesnt sleep. It probably went through a winter slow down and then got too much Sun. When did it get its new pot. Is it going through a little transplant shock. If so the sun got to it. Maybe mist it a little and watch the sun on it for 3 weeks. Maybe some fish seaweed fertilizer would be better than Miracle gro or no fertilizer if it has to sleep. I think maybe it wants to go to sleep and you just fed it pop rocks and a Pepsi. The rose experts on this forum gotta know what type of rose and where it is.

Roses are outdoor plants. Take the little one outside, filtered light. No more fertilizer, just keep the soil moist.

If it's warm enough and there is no danger of a frost where you are you need to get that rose outside. Rose do not like indoor conditions at all. Take it outside and gradually move it into full sun and you'll see it take off and grow!

The good news is that this is most likely a warm climate rose, so you live in the perfect place for it. The bad news is that ROSES ARE NOT HOUSE PLANTS, period. However, the bad news is easy to solve! Put it outside in filtered sun immediately!. The air in our homes is WAY too dry for roses, they don't get enough light, and many other problems. It will die if you leave it indoors.

After it is outside in filtered light (it should remain outdoors forever), wait a couple of weeks so that it can get used to being outside, and used to getting some light. Then you can move it into full sun. DO NOT feed it, do not spray it with anything - just make sure it gets enough water. Right now it is trying to grow roots.

Oh, I just had a thought - is it in a plastic pot? I have had baby roses die in plastic pots in full sun in the hot summer simply because the pot got too hot and they literally cooked. If that is a plastic pot, I would leave the rose in filtered light for a bit longer, and then get a much much bigger clay pot and put it in that. Then you could put it into full sun.

Then just leave it alone for 1-2 months. When it recuperates and starts growing, you can feed it according to the instructions. Nip off any flower buds you see while it is still tiny - it will grow better faster without having to support flowers. When it gets maybe three times as big as it is now, I would plant it in the ground (in full sun) - sounds as if you have other roses outside, and know how to do that.

I use only plastic pots now because for me they're more practical, lighter and they don't crack over winter, and I've never had a problem. There is actually some research that says an unglazed pot can steal water and hold it away from the plant. Make sure there are good drainage holes in the bottom and DO NOT put one of those trays under it. If you have a trivet with holes in it put it on that to get it up off the ground so the water can drain freely. The trays hold water in the bottom of the pot and the roots will rot.

So glad to hear that the poor thing is outside! What seil said about drainage is very important - otherwise the roots will rot. It will do fine in a BIG clay pot for a year so that you can give it to your daughter - that is no problem. By then it should have bloomed, and maybe we can figure out who it is and give advice about how she can best take care of it.

Maybe you could try again with another rose that your daughter could get with you. I think something went wrong in the roots and the soil. Dry chemical fertilizers burn roots. It is too dry inside. The roots might have got a root rot. I think seedlings and cuttings need sterile potting soil and have to be misted and watered every day. A dome or plastic over to keep it humid while rooting and also a growlight might help. then go outside an hour a day. I have success with rooting in the ground outside. With a hose end mister for 4 hours. I also have had success with a rooter pot that clips on a live rose cane. Florist roses are grown in Columbia. They are a different type of rose. A squirrel or deer is different than here. I have not tried rooting a florist rose but it can be done. You almost had it! Keep trying with another rose. Life is not the destination but it is enjoying the journey.
