Tenacity application help.

I have a little less than a quarter acre lot and would like to put down tenacity to get rid of my Poa A and Poa T as well as some orchardgrass.

How would I go about putting this down in the most efficient manner? I have a 2 gallon pump sprayer and Ortho hose end sprayer. I assume the hose end would be the best route but am unsure of the rates or how to set the dial.

I will be putting this down as a Pre Em as well in the fall before I aerate and overseed.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm in NW Ohio, 6A

Front yard is a tri blend and back yard appears to be a fescue/bluegrass mix with some K31 here and there.

Actually, the pump sprayer in this case. While Tenacity has some root activity, it works better if you spray it on the leaves of the P. annua and P. trivialis.

1 tsp per gallon per thousand square feet would be the correct usage. I'd also add a spreader sticker like Bonide Turbo to the mix to get it to adhere to the leaves. And remember that 1 gallon per thousand square feet isn't that much at all...

Tenacity's not going to be at its most effective in July and August as the P. annua and P. triv aren't in their higher growth phases. However, it should have some impact, although you'll likely have to repeat applications to kick it down totally.

Read the directions on using it and follow them. You are limited in how much you can use in any year and it needs to be mixed precisely and applied to a certain amount of area in an even way. A hose end spray will not be precise enough. You will be filling up the pump sprayer a number of times to cover the whole yard. You might consider adding a dye as well as the surfactant so you can see where you've sprayed and where you haven't. Apply it after you aerate, not before, if you have to aerate. Poa annua ought to be pretty knocked out already by the summer heat. Applying Tenacity when you overseed in August will act as a pre-emergent for next year's crop of poa annua. Apply it again a month after seeding and then use a normal pre-emergent a month after that.

Well once again resurrecting this thread - now that spring is upon us. To refresh - we're in Eastern Mass, have KBG/P Rye/Fescue mix with bentgrass patches throughout. Also some patches of what I think is Orchardgrass. Planning to apply Tenacity (which I know is very effective on bent, and marginal on Orchard..) Question is: when exactly? Yes we've covered that it can be used pretty much anytime - but I'm assuming more effective when grass is actively growing? Which - we seem to be just entering that time. Point is - I'm eager to get it down to start killing, but don't want to waste it if it's too early. The grass is definitely awake now - but not necessarily thriving yet. And - I'm thinking the answer to this might be obvious - but other than wasting the precious Tenacity, is there a reason why I wouldn't spray the whole yard with it? In a tank sprayer, but I mean try to hit everywhere. I can identify so many patches that it's hard to tell where one patch ends and the desirable grass begins... Thanks much -

The weed looks like henbit, which is a winter annual (sprouting in fall, growing in n spring, dying in summer). I have a similar dilemma to yours. I overseeded and have a lot of new grass. I used Tenacity at seeding (4 oz /acre rate) and did a second application around 5 weeks at the 2 oz/acre rate. My initial plan was to do two follow-up applications and then use prodiamine as a more effective pre-emergent in November (trying to ward off poa annua). I haven't done the second follow-up and don't think I will and I think I'm going to wait until March for the pre-emergent. I will save the Tenacity for spring when I can identify poa annua (if I have it now I don't recognize it) and use spot sprays (mixed at 2 oz/acre rate) then. Reason for change of plans: all herbicides are a stress and I want the new grass to grow as well as it can now before the season shuts down. I can deal with weeds later. Some of my new grass has been slow to come in. I wonder if the Tenacity hindered germination and growth of some of the fescue. I put more seed down at the same time as the follow-up application of Tenacity because some areas were very thin. They are still somewhat thin. I never had this problem with other overseeding and this is the first time I've used Tenacity.

I wouldn't recommend them as they're meant as pre-emergents during seeding. They certainly won't do wonders to the bentgrass as Tenacity does have an impact through the roots, but it isn't as effective as the sprayed product would be (which would have an effect via the spray and, secondarily, again when washed off into the soil where it works both as a pre-emergent and root-active ingredient). This is apart from the fact that the fertilizers are starters as well, so the phosphorus levels are very, very high compared to the nitrogen levels. I wouldn't necessarily object to using this once...but there are considerations where even that might be a slight issue. We simply don't know if that's the case without a soil test. Personally, I'd use the spray, target the worst areas to start, and continue on that way until you conquer the problem.
