Chamberlain Opener problem

I have a Chamberlain Whisper Drive model WD832KD 1/2 HP Belt drive opener. The problem I have is that when I open it in the morning, it jerks up & down the first 4-6 inches, then smooths out and opens normally. Closing it, it jerks some but, not as violently as when being opened. I disconnect the door from the opener and all is well there. The door is balanced and runs smoothly up and down manually. In fact, the opener passes all safety and other operational factors!

I notice the problem is more noticeable when the door has been closed overnight and then opened in the morning. I thought maybe the "Torsion Springs" may have gotten weak, so I wound them a half turn but did not correct the problem. It seems to me that there is wear "play" some place on the opener that I cannot find. I am now thinking that the trolley that rides on the lift rail may be worn? This up and down jerking has got to be hard on the opener.

I installed the opener back in Sept 2009 and has worked flawlessly until 2 months ago. Any information on what to look for to possibly correct this problem?

Your photo eyes are out of alignment. They are mounted at the bottom of the door adjust them until you get a solid green light.

I checked and the smaller gear is not turning the limit controls. It acts like it's slipping. I'll have the smaller gear lined up, but when i plug the unit in the motors starts running and the shaft kind of pushes the small gear away and keeps it from lining up. I have tried turning the smaller gear by hand to get the limit terminals to touch and the motor still doesn't respond. My guess, is that it has to be something with the smaller gear though, as nothing else seems to be out of place.

The Smart Control panel on my Chamberlain garage door is a major problem for me. The light continues to go on. Even the Clock goes to default all the time. In four years I've replaced 20 light bulbs and two 398lm control Panel. This is a little bit out of hand. I called Chamberlain last week and they've tried to troubleshoot it. It doesn't seem to be the control board because it doesn't happen when I disconnect the Smart Control Panel. I just rewired the SCP and again its starting again. I'm waiting for Chamberlain to contact me on what to do next. Has this happened to anyone before. Chamberlain tech Chris says he hasn't heard of this before. This is the worst garage door opener I've ever had. Do you suppose they'll reinburse me for the 20 light bulbs? NOT !!!!

Why can't you lift it manually? Is it because it's too heavy or is there interference from the opener? A properly operating and balanced door should open easily manually without a lot of effort. Release the opener with the door all the way down and then press the button. Does the trolley go all the way back like it should? This indicates that the opener is working OK but there's a problem with the door. It sounds like you probably have a broken spring on the door. There are two basic spring configurations. One has two long springs at the roof that run parallel to the tracks one on each side of the door. The other has a single torsion spring located above the head of the garage door. Hope this helps.
