Which of these 2 sofas should I choose?
There are these 2 sofas online...yes, I know I'm taking a risk buying a sofa online...I just am torn on which to choose. My $ budget is limited.
Here's the first one...an oldie but goodie Ralph Lauren. Cheterfield style in a wool fabric. 92" L x 30" H x 39" D $995. + at least $300 shipping (scouting for shippers on uShip.com). Sofa is in CT and I'm in Central NY.
It's used (20+ yrs old) and a few hundred dollars more than the second sofa (shipping is the killer) but...it's a Ralph Lauren! In great condition too! I figure I can keep this for years and down the road if I want to reupholster it, etc. it's got great bones (I'm assuming) and down feather cushions. That's the only reason I'm considering a used sofa.
Sofa #2: Brand new, light beige 94" L x 36" H x 39" D. $887 and free shipping.
Still keeping the Chesterfield style and it has a little higher back which I like (more comfortable for me) BUT it's lsted as Horizon Chenille tufted sofa , from IFD Home Furnishings. Not as well known furniture company, it appears. As I've tried googling them. Sofa has chenille fabric, W cleaning code, "Cushion cores are constructed of low melt fiber wrapped over high quality foam.", "Seats and back spring rails are cutfrom 7/8” hardwood."
Thoughts? Opinions? I've looked at retailers in person but everything I seem to love is waaay out of my budget (thank you Ethan Allen) or in my budget and sorely lacking, IMO.

Comments (6)I've found that regular white LED bulbs work as good, maybe slightly better than red+blue LED lights. It's true that red+blue can theoretically be more efficient, but with most of the cheap red+blue grow lights out there, I don't think they will really be that much more efficient than a cheap white LED bulb. In any case, efficiency gets kind of irrelevant when your plants can benefit from the extra heat. (All lights are actually 100% efficient, it's just that some of them convert more of that energy to heat rather than light than others) So to rephrase this another way, it would make no sense to use a "more efficient" light if an electric heater was also being used at the same time. Anyway, there's some reason to believe that using a mix of red+blue and white together may be better than either alone, so you could always save some money that way. I've had a tropical camellia species do extremely well under just a 5000K white LED bulb, and citrus has also done well under just white light....See MoreWhich builder should I choose?
Comments (34)Contract types are frequently interchanged on this forum but are essential to understand as one does not get to treat their build like cost plus in one aspect, and then treat it like fixed price in another aspect. Which is this contract? One doesn’t know for sure but can assume with allowances it is likely a fixed price contract, so in this instance, one is getting a price for the job, not itemized lists of costs. Fixed price contracts can and often do provide fairly detailed bids, but this is not the same thing as the builder opening his books to you. If you want that, then proceed with cost plus. On the topic of markups, expect to pay markup on cost plus or fixed price contracts, as the home buyer should and does on any product they purchase. Trying to remove half the materials from mark-up as frequently suggested on this forum is asking the builder to work for less amount with greater risk. More expensive and complicated materials are frequently more to project manage, more effort in labor and skill to install, and CERTAINLY more risk for the builder should some of these materials need replaced during the build or the warranty period. If one paid markup on $5,000 worth of counter tops but changed to $25,000 worth of counter tops with no additional markup, it’s easy to see how the builder is in a terrible spot if he had to replace $25,000 worth of counter tops on a $5,000 worth of mark-up fee. Simple math really. Mark ups never cover all the potential things that can go wrong in a build, but they are a way to manage risk, which is real in any build. Increasing risk and work load to the builder by adding lots of expensive and complicated materials to manage without correspondingly applying the mark up fee is essentially asking them to take more risk for nothing in return. Comments (24)Here is a tiny half bath (former closet) where we did an inexpensive update. The previous sink and toilet were too large for the room and the walls were rough and damaged. I added shiplap made the from flooring underlay, a couple of $5 rolls of wallpaper and a shallow vanity on clearance. . biggest expense was a small round front Toto toilet. Big improvement, I think, and if someone wants to change it later it won't be difficult or expensive. The old room was so dingy and awkward to use that I discouraged guests from using it. Now it's cheerful and I smile when I go in there. Do what you like!...See Morewildbrat
