painted cabinets-- how do they hold up?
Comments (4)I believe that is a key differentiator of quality. Cabinet finishers make a big fuss about how many coats and what kinds, where applied and what to do between coats. We had Rutt cabinets in our old kitchen, which I believe are pretty high end. They are 9 years old and the paint looks like new. Very impressive. Actually, they are so perfect that I specifically asked for hand painting in my new house because I want a rustic look and the paint was so perfect it seemed like it could be fake, to me....See MoreWho has used RH paint and how does it hold up?
Comments (15)Cyn, I think it has been around 10 years. It was whenever RH put their first store in my state. I walked in the store at the mall and instantly fell in love with the Silver Sage on the walls of the store. I had never even visited a decorating board website at that time so I did not learn about it here. I love their color palate and did every room in my house with RH except for one room that I wanted in a gray or charcoal. RH did not have their *Flint* line out yet at that time. I should have waited! :) I found RH paints to be one coat coverage. Great! If I ever have to repaint my ceilings white again I'm going with RH The Right White instead of that crappy "ceiling paint" I bought at the hardware store when I did it. One thing to keep in mind is that RH has a limited selection of colors. I think this is great because most of the "work" has been done for you with them narrowing down the choices to only what would be most popular. But............they don't keep all the colors around forever. Right now I have to repaint my whole bathroom. I changed out the lighting fixtures around the mirror and the new ones have a much smaller plate. I can't just do a touch up because they no longer sell the color. I'm really bumming because I have to pick a new color and the one I have on the walls now is perfect. It's kind of like finding out your favortie lipstick color or foundation has been discontinued and you have to start the search all over....See MoreDoes a painted finish hold up over time?
Comments (6)The original owner of our house stopped by recently, and commented that she had painted the cabinets in the 1960s. We bought the house in 2004, and MAYBE the cabinets had been repainted by the 2nd owner, but I don't think so, they were in pretty good shape. We had them painted about 7 years ago because we wanted a whiter white. The laundry room cupboards were painted in the 60's, too, still look perfect today with no touch-ups. Gosh, probably has lead in it and that's why it's so durable. If you do proper prep, use superior paint, and good technique (my painter used a roller and I think a sprayer), they may last as long as ours have. Our painter said preparing the surface is the key, you want to be sure the paint adheres to the surface for good....See MoreWill painted cabinets hold up as well as natural or stained wood?
Comments (4)Msbrandy, I can certainly relate to your dilemma. My prior home had walnut stained cabinets with white counters which I enjoyed for 35 years. The wood was refinished twice and looked great the day the house was sold. The kitchen in my current home had a complete remodel two years ago. I chose white factory painted cabinets this time for two reasons. Like you, there are no windows in my kitchen although it faces a wall of windows because of the open concept. I really felt the need to lighten the space. The second reason is purely emotional, I was ready for a change from the dark wood. When it's time to refurbish, it should help that the doors are full overlay so they can be spray painted in a professional paint booth. As I recall, stripping and refinishing natural wood cabinets, was a major ordeal as well. Anyway, cherry or painted would be beautiful. Wishing you the best with your remodel....See Moreamberm145
