Has Bengal or Spectracide Wasp & Hornet Killer worked best for you?

Has Bengal or Spectracide Wasp & Hornet Killer worked best for you? I was totally sold on Bengal until I c/n find it at Wal-Mart or Home Depot recently. Both had Spectracide (20 OZ) and much cheaper than Bengal (15 OZ).

Other Concerns:

1. I was pleased with Bengal’s 20’Blast. Spectracide listed 27’, one consumer report listed 10’ at best.

2. I was pleased with Bengal’s 20’ stream at 20’, Spectracide looked weak at the 10’ I used today.

3. All the wasp did appear dead or gone. I will leave the 2 nests 24 hrs to see if any wast return (after the chemical's contact).

I use the Raid. Although it does not seem as strong as it was years ago. I have not used the Bengal.

All the wasp were killed on the two nest. There was a third so close that I missed and was confused that wasp had returned. There was plenty activity that I did not see at my last investigation yesterday. I removed the treated ones with wasp still attached to one.

My pole got close enough to the active nest that they were disturbed. I’ll try the Spectracide again and pay more attention to the wind and distance. These 3 were on my lowest over-hang trim which made them easy to reach (10’ away). Gables will need a good 20’ reach.

Actually, I’ll test the reach and return the 1 and ¾ cans on their return policy if I can find Bengal close in cost. I might experiment with Dawn Liquid Soap or Pine Soil and Water since no electrical wires or sources are close. Who has tried one of these mixtures? I have an old Stainless Fire Extinguisher that airs to 100 PSI, That Will Blow Them Away At 20’.

Judo, you can't just spray him off, you gotta spray him off then kill him. I guess if I was allergic I would think differently, but I'm not, so I go after them. We have a 2000+ sq ft deck, so I spend all summer long killing wasps when they land on the pool water to drink, one day we killed over 100. plus, with the greenhouse, (they love the greenhouse) we've got a ton, so far in the greenhouse I've killed well over 50 this year. If they are on a plant I don't care about I'll either hit them off with my hand or shoe, hopefully they will hit the floor and I'll smash them, if not they usually fly off. Always destroy the nest they are building cos they will go back. And buy one of those good heavy black fly swatters, they work great. water or insecticidal soap work well to get them off the plant, then you can kill them. Wasps & hornets are the only things I actively go after to kill, I really hate them. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think they might be like other animals, if you run they will chase, if you stand up to them and go after them like a psycho, they run. Gosh, you'd think that with that hornet nest being about 15' up in the air that they really wouldn't have bothered attacking you. It seems like that's enough space that they wouldn't feel frightened, but then again, what do I know, I'm not a hornet. Pretty many years ago, I also got zapped by a bald face hornet when I was outside picking raspberries The nest was hanging really close to where I thought they'd be. I was stung plenty of times over the years by yellow jackets, wasps, hornets and maybe even a honey bee one time if I remember correctly. I think that was the time when I was clapping at our dog (many years ago, as I was a kid) and wouldn't you know it, that was just the time when one decided to fly in my bubble and I got zapped. I think the two times when stings hurt the most, though, was when I was zapped by the raspberry patch-living hornet and also two different times when I inadvertently reached right onto a saddleback cat. Ouch, I was surprised that a caterpillar sting could hurt so much. I really intend to use your "tennis racket" zapper method starting next year to "try" to annihilate those doggone European hornet butterfly murderers. Maybe I can also get the population down from a million to half a million like you did. Hey, it's a start anyway. I certainly can understand your saying that because there are sooo many of the potato leafhoppers. I think I remember reading about some bait that a person can put on the lilacs that they're stripping the bark off of and they carry it back to the nest and it also poisons the other hornets, so that's something else I can try. I have to look into exactly what to get. The way I look at it is that they don't belong here, so I don't feel the least bit guilty killing them. It infuriates me when I see them patrolling the butterfly bushes looking for their next victim. I feel better this year than last year and will be taking a much more proactive approach next year to eliminate the invasives, whether it be insect, bird or plant.

Two years ago, paper wasps built a nest underneath the glass top of my patio table, which is shaded by an umbrella. Neighborhood cats routinely used the chairs of the table for sleeping, and I daily used the top of the table as a landing spot for garden stuff. We all got along, and I was able to watch the nest progress through the glass. It was really interesting. One year back when I had a cherry tree, I put up my ladder one foot from a beautiful bald-faced hornets nest, and picked cherries for a couple of hours. Bald-faced hornets are not aggressive, and they went about their business, as did I. A number of years ago, yellow jackets took up residence in a compost bin I hadn’t turned in a while. By August, I decided they had to go, but without pesticides. I used a large-diameter insect net, and each day after work I stood in their line of flight and waved the net in a figure-eight motion. The yellow jackets really didn’t like the net, and flew right in trying to attack. I netted over 800 yellow jackets over probably two weeks. Towards the end of that process, I could tell the population was declining, and eventually I saw yellow jackets flying out carrying eggs, which made me a little sad. I hope the population was able to re-establish in a different place. I was never stung, either while I was netting them, or before, when over 800 were flying around the yard. The above commenter is right: most insects are intent on their business and leave us alone as long as we leave them alone.

Finding a Yellow Jacket Wasp Nest in a Plant Stand’s Drawer was a first for me. I have learned that when I see A Yellow Jacket Calmly Hanging Around, “A Nest Is Probably Close”. After 2-3 days of seeing the wasp on the Patio, I decided to take a seat and observe where the wasp goes. It went in a straw basket drawer of a plant stand.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I peeped in through the good spacing handle area where the wasp flew in. In there I saw a full active nest. I knew to get a good Spray Blast of Spectracide Wasp Killer I would need to open the drawer. With my Tree Limb Pole Saw extended over 12’ I pulled the drawer out onto the floor. Not one wasp left the nest and I got a good Blast On All.

This has been a very active 6 weeks with Yellow Jackets and I am learning to observe their habits.

Such As:

1. They can be calm if not disturbed.

2. There might be a wasp guarding the area.

3. There could be workers to return after a nest is treated.

4. They can build a nest fast.

It has been my luck that I have not touched a nest due to some of the low places I have found some in shrub and cabinets. The Spectracide has is working good at approx 10 -12’ I have used it.
