Comments (26)This could also be done with the decorative leaved sweet potato varieties, some of which also flower. They look very much like these too in many cases. For them warmth is a key, though; my 55-65 degree kitchen is not warm enough for the cuttings I took last autumn. It worked for my phal orchid and African violet plants, and it has carried my cured onion and garlic bulbs and sweet potato roots very well, but not the sp cuttings. Standard sweet potatoes can also be overwintered as decorative vining plants, but they do not do well if chilled....See MoreSome pics from my young garden( Photo heavy)
Comments (9)Thank you all for your compliments! The Cl.Pinkie is also one of my favorites and I love how she has done in that corner. Very easy to train rose. Juliet- Thank you for such a beautiful description. Yes, Summerville is a beautiful place to live. It is also called Flower Town as it if full of flowers all year and had loads of gorgeous old plantation houses. Just 20-30 min from historic Charleston. Just yesterday I went for a walk downtown and admired the courtyard gardens full of roses, lovely little flower boxes bursting with color and lots of other flowers. Must come and visit sometime! Masha- Ducher was stunning this year. IN the pic of the driveway border its the one not blooming. She was the first to come into her spring flush. Ingrid- Thank you, yes I do put a lot of thought into flower choices and combination. Cottage gardening is my style and I try to keep the eye flowing through the garden with repeating colors and heights. I do still have a lot of grass and I am working on it. I do have another large rose/perennial bed with several other roses and plants but they are not in the photos. I have the whole side yard planned out but due to the hard terrible clay soil I have started doing the lasagna bed method of laying down cardboard and layering like a compost pile. It worked fantastic last year! I love this method, saves my back, the plants I planted this spring have taken off in it. I'll show some pic's soon. ~Meghan...See MoreA few from my garden wasalk this morning May 6
Comments (4)Caliloo, Thank you for showing your very nice hostas! How old are your streaked seedlings? Perhaps 3 or 4 years old? I am interested in that because right now I am growing hosta seedlings under light. They are covering the surface of styrofoam cups now, growing slooowly. When I am done with culling and potting up in 2 weeks or so, I plan to have 20 streaked seedlings, plus 15 other seedlings left. How did the leaf markings of your streaker seedlings look when they were half a year old, very different to the present ones? I read that they change from year to year. Comments (19)I am located in the Kansas City, MO area, not exactly California. I have grown Kordes' Brilliant in the Pacific Northwest and here in the midwest. It gets about 4 - 5 feet tall, has reasonably good disease resistance, but does benefit from a regular spray program. It is one of my first to flower and last to quit. Its growth habit is straight up, almost cylindrical, but spreading a bit. Its flowering habit is what you would expect as a grandiflora which would be a good class for this rose, but that class is not used in Europe. It blooms singly and in trusses as shown. The color in the photograph is quite close to real and is quite stable from beginning to end and through cool and heat. It does not have much of a problem with our winters here either with the multiple freeze-thaw cycles. It is fairly sturdy. It is one of the few that I have more than one of in the garden. It is available from Hortico and Vintage Gardens. I would put it as one of my better oranges....See More- 8 years ago
