Why is purchasing a diswasher so difficult?

I am trying to purchase a new dishwasher because my mid range whirlpool is just not cleaning well, especially the upper rack. I have had repair people out twice in the 5 years I have had it and basically they removed clogs in the base of the dishwasher.

I am aggravated and want a dishwasher THAT CLEANS THE DISHES! Why is this so difficult?

From the research that I have done, changes in energy regulation as well as the fact that Whirlpool is making most of dishwashers these days makes it very difficult to compare a brand of dishwasher from today with ones made years ago.

My shopping options are limited to Lowes, Home Depot and Sears but when you look at the reviews there will always be someone who has had a horrible experience! I have read the reviews over and over again and still have no front runner. Sears service contract are ridiculously high, $350 for 5 years as opposed lowes/home depot 5!years for $120.

Miele machines are not sold in my area and the Bosche machines get mixed reviews.. I am ready to plunk down$$ for an upper end machine, but I want to do that only if I am confident the machine will do the job.

I guess this is more of a rant than asking advice. If anyone has any insight, I would appreciate it. I had hoped to get a deal on a sale this week, or I can wait until the fall.

I empathize. Just went through the same issue. I almost bought a Samsung since that's what the other appliances were until I read the horrible reviews. Mostly they don't dry ect. Come to find out that most of them don't have heating elements anymore. That is a deal breaker for me. I live in Florida and leaving standing water in a dishwasher is not an option. I already have to leave my frontload washing machine open to dry and I refused to have to do the same with a dishwasher. There weren't many options left. I went with Kitchenaid from Best Buy. They price match and I love the geek squad service warranty. Not disappointed. Got it on sale for under 500.00

It retailed up there with Bosch in the 800 range. Home Depot sells it too for the same price. Under 500 I mean.

Another Asko fan here...had mine 2 years. I got the next to Top of the Line the 3251. It's very convenient and loads anything that I've thrown at it. The top rack also comes out and the middle spray arm pops off so you can wash extra tall items like furnace filters and the like. Like Steve_o said, its very quiet and cleans fabulously. It also goes for several hundred less than the comparable Miele's. I decided I did not want to pay for a water softener that I don't need. I already have a great big one in my basement. I guess it would make sense if you were hooking the Miele up to kitchen cold, which is typically not softened by a whole house softener. My Asko is hooked to hot. The Asko is great at fitting all the weird stuff we actually use every day...endless sippy cups, lids, food processor bits and bowls, blender bowls. The top rack has this wide slanting shelf that so many things fit on. The Asko also dries the dishes very nicely. Good luck shopping!

Glad you posted your experience with the platform bed and condensation, Jason..... I do not have the stratton bed, I have a queen storage bed from ROOM AND BOARD. I have a foam mattress from them too, but not a Tempurpedic. My bed has wooden slats above the drawers, beneath the mattress. I will check to see if there is condensation, but I think it is fairly well ventilated. I can tell you from experience sleeping on boat mattresses, that it is not just a problem with the Stratton, that all mattresses sitting on solid surfaces and with cooler spaces beneath them, they will get wet. During my years working on boats, I found total wet mattresses many times, and sunning them on deck was only a temporary relief. If you have actual MOLD in your mattress, I'd say it would be a good idea to get rid of it. Getting rid of mold is tough. Did the solid sheet of plywood ship with the Stratton bed? I'm surprised it has no holes drilled in it, or that it did not ship with slats. Very interesting question you've asked there too. I was thinking about putting a solid sheet of material beneath my mattress, but had hesitated due to my previous experience on boat bunk beds. So now I know it can happen even on land in a house. I'm wondering if a hemmed piece of carpet or the bread delivery tray stuff would give it some room to aspirate? As expensive as a Tempurpedic is, I'd hate to throw it out, but if it creates a health problem, what are the options?

UPDATE: So I received an answer from the owner of the store who is hanging with the manufacturer in the USA right now. He brought the furniture back to the builder and discussed the issues I had with it. He explained his policy as this is custom ordered, not just taken from a shelf. They have never sold this set as painted before, they cannot give a refund until they try to solve the issues with the product. The painter was different from the builder and had the builder seen it it wouldn't have passed inspection. So the owner and manufacturer are proposing that when the owner goes down to the US again at the end of October, he will bring back beautiful furniture that is painted by the manufacturer who has experience painting kitchen cabs and will be inspected by the owner of the manufacture company. Then before it is delivered to our house, we will go to the store to inspect it. So they have my 4K and I'm not getting furniture for another 2 months. So now what? It's not just the finishing, cross bars were cracked and the backs were hacked (as per the pics!). It sounds like they will fix the cosmetic stuff, but I don't know. I just have such a bad taste in my mouth about this whole thing now. The owner of the local store says he is in the US and doesn't get internet most of the time, so I can contact him next week. Do you think I have enough to open a formal dispute with the cc company, or because they are trying to fix it I'm stuck with it? THANK you for all your advice and wisdom!

No, keep the air gap because it's safer from a sanitation perspective than using a high loop. Do you see the tube (or spout) coming off of the garbage disposal in your photo? It's just above the waste drain coming off of your garbage disposal. That hose from the air gap should connect to that tube (or spout) coming off of the garbage disposal. Just make sure you unplug the electric cord for the garbage disposal and then use a hammer and a long screw driver and tap, tap, tap.....knock out the plug inside of the tube so the water from the dishwasher can flow into the garbage disposal. After you knock out the metal plug, then double check to make sure you unplugged the power to the garbage disposal before you reach your hand in and pull out the metal plug that you knocked out of the tube. It's very easy to do and not a big deal. Then connect the hose so it runs from the air gap to that tube on the garbage disposal and use a hose clamp to tighten the hose to the tube. That's how I have mine set up and it works fine. I installed my own air gap and also installed my garbage disposal and, as part of that process, I had to go to a plumbing supply store to pick up the right size hose to run from the air gap to the tube coming off of the garbage disposal. Maybe the hose you already have coming off of the air gap will work fine though. Check out Square Trade dot com for warranties. It has the best terms and prices that I've found. Costco and Amazon offer Sq Trade. I've had their warranties on a few items. Have not had to make a claim so I can't say for sure that they do what they say they will, but they sure have a lot of positives from Costco and Amazon. I did get a warranty from them for my new refrigerator because the refrigerator was quite expensive and it seems that no appliance lasts very long without expensive repairs.

Bosch 800 series, there's no question. If you keep rinse aid in it the dishes will come dry (has a warning message when its out). The only things that come out a little wet are plastic, but it isnt a big deal for us. Cleans everything (though we still use bkf occasionally on the ss pans) great. It's so quiet you barely know its on (and only when you're within a few feet). We've had it for a year now without any issues (no standing water issues or any other). I would buy another in a heartbeat. You can talk lowes downon the price and bosch is offering a rebate currently. You can get the higher end 800 series for less than $1000 or the other 800 for a few hundred less.

This dishwasher makes the dishes sparkle and everything gets dry too. There isn't a lot of love on this site for Asko but I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

It isn't that hard. You have set your parameters: clean dishes, heating element. That eliminates all of the European models. Look at the KitchenAid; not everyone has a horror story. You're right about local service--a must have. If you change your mind about the heater, I would get the Bosch. Samsung doesn't seem to do either washers or dishwashers well. Remember the KitchenAid is the upmarket Whirlpool brand.

I can sympathize with you. I have a Maytag portable dishwasher from 1998 or 1999 that I absolutely love, but it is slowly starting to head toward the grave. There is very few options for portable machines, just Kenmore and Whirlpool, and they both have filters that need to be cleaned periodically and long running times. I wish manufacturers would realize that there are still many people in the world that cannot have built in dishwashers. Maybe having special order models or something like that. Maytag was the only option that I would like because they have a grinder but they have discontinued their models. My current Maytag runs less than 90 minutes for a Pots and Pans cycle, cleans everything beautifully, and every item comes out unbelievably dry. I'm sick that I may have to replace it with something of lesser quality.
