Broken rose cane on a young climber. What to do?

I'm so upset... I was installing a new trellis and accidentally broke this cane. What can be done. Should I/can I propagate it? Right now I have it in water indoors. Any ideas for future about healing a broken cane? This is a Joseph's Coat climber.

Yes, it is perfect for trying to root. I would make two cuttings out of it. Me being me would try three. I like to experiment. Have you tried rooting cuttings before?

As stated you want to start moving it toward the trellis earlier rather than later. As the canes age they'll probably get stiffer and it will be hard to get them to bend. Keep moving them as they grow out and are flexible. I learned this the hard way when I waited and ended up snapping off a large cane on one of my climbers that had matured and just didn't have any give left in it. Now I tie them off early. Sometimes they look a little funny because they aren't very tall yet but in the end it works out. Your trellis is lovely but do move it out from the wall so you have some working space behind it. It will also give the rose better air circulation. You and the rose will be happier.

Hmm.. while last winter almost did not happen - the lowest temperatures we had were probably 15F, once every couple of years we do get a winter with some February nights below 0F. So I wouldn't say Eden is cane hardy where I live, at least not on those cold years I think. I've only read on forums that some people manage to grow it here but for how long - I don't know. So you are saying I will be growing this rose for a while and then one spring it just won't return. You are probably right.. It's not likely to ever get large. Yes, I have been tracking shadow cast by trees, there is also a garage there which casts shade. I'd probably plant it 2-3' from the canopies then and support it with a simple obelisk rather than worry about a pergola there :-) I actually thought duct-taping the canes wouldn't work, I assumed it wouldn't heal since it's hard wood. Unfortunately, I have no experience growing roses at all. I think I'll try it, though, and see what happens. If it's only a matter of time before the rose dies in the winter, it doesn't matter much anyway, plus there won't be much of the heavyweight growth above the crack. Gotcha, Mad gallica, on the shrubby thing. I don't want shrubby. The area is about a ten foot privacy wall between our driveway and our neighbor's property. There is only about two feet of clearance between the fence and the driveway, so shrubby definitely won't do it. At our old home I grew several of the David Austin roses with great success. I remember one of them, Abraham Darby--that is the type of graceful, arching aspect I am thinking of. Canes would get to be about 7-8 feet long, as I recall. I remember severely pruning it at the end of the season and then mounding some hay over it--i.e., no dramatic protection--and each year it bloomed just as beautifully. That is kind of what I am thinking of. I am also beginning to think that I am going to have to deal with mulch if I want to grow something really beautiful. Also--just for my own understanding: Climbers don't necessarily have to grow on old wood, correct? If I don't need to preserve the canes, then I could use any long-caned rose in that location, right? If it is very tender (floppy), then it probably would not root. If not, then you can root them. Search on the Rose propagation page and you can find various methods. I would make a clean cut where they broke and put in water until you decide what to do. When you look, if you see the "baggy" method, I have never successfully rooter anything that way. But some people do. LOL

There are probably hundreds of different methods. Look on the Rose Progation page for "Rose Growing in Plastic Tubs". It has a couple different methods. And you can ask questions if you don't understand. Don't be afraid to try, that is the easiest way to learn.

Good luck! The MOST important thing is to not let the soil get too wet as it will cause fungus and the cuttings will die. I have killed more cuttings by overwatering that I can count. I try rooting any plant that I break off. You never know what works until you try and don't get discouraged if it does not succeed.. Also look at "This is what has worked for me". He has pictures of his method.

Thanks for that tip. Just one more thing... If they do develop roots later and since it's summertime and I'm in zone 5 do I let them got dormant in the winter and then plant them in spring? or should I plant them in the fall this year?

They will be too young and tender to put out this fall. They won't have time to develop strong roots. I keep mine inside. I have a room in my unheated basement for keeping plants that I have rooted or am rooting.
