Comments (80)Thanks, everyone! Y'all continue to say such nice things. Chicagoans, yes, that was the intent. It's abstractly a pond scene, but whatever someone takes from it is fine with me. :) Rhome, the open shelves over the oven cabinet was an answer to the looming question. If the oven cabinet had gone to the ceiling like the rest it would have been overpowering between the window and the door, and worse if a bridge had been made over either. The shelves allowed me to shorten the oven cabinet without leaving a void, and to use the upper space while breaking up the vertical plane. I'm so glad it worked for you aesthetically! Lee, I don't know if those kind of tubes don't come in the correct size for the fixtures, or if maybe they weren't available when the lighting was done (this was a few years ago now). While he was at it, the designer had gels made for the more conventional tubes in my laundry room fixture, but that's also, I'm sure, to make it easier. They have gels and bounce off the ceiling both. The paint color was a compromise between my not wanting white and it having to be light/white enough for the indirect lighting. Unfortunately, no fluorescent gives off the kind of organized light that incandescents do (which makes things look sharper), but at least these don't bug my eyes. :)...See MoreMy Big Fat Reveal - pics of everything
Comments (35)So it's been over a week, and I've hardly done anything in the kitchen but pour a bowl of cereal - I've been working 12-hour graveyard shifts for the last 8 days (which hopefully excuses some of my typos in this thread). My college-aged sons were home for the weekend, and took the new oven on its maiden voyage (pizza), and made popcorn on the stove - something we missed a lot when we were sans kitchen. Yesterday DH made refrigerator pickles and pineapple upside-down cake, so he's having fun at least! I want to thank everyone here for the support and encouragement. I didn't find this site until I was finished with the layout, but I still had an awful lot to learn, and many decisions to make. I am so grateful to have had such a wonderful group of TKO friends to share the journey with me!...See MoreBig kitchen reveal
Comments (10)I need a small calendar Debbie! I usually keep one of those very small calendars with a sticky back on it and lightly press it to the wall below the phone to the left. The local Amish bakery gives out this type of calendar, red, and in the shape of a teapot with their logo on it. This year I didn't get down there in time before they ran out. :( I haven't been able to find any, looked online too but only found them for wholesale, not indiv. I thought The Victorian Trading Post used to carry them but I checked and apparently not anymore. Yes, it's a working vintage phone. The pencil holder I found at a thrift shop, and is actually a candle holder. I think it must have been one of a series of buildings in a village decor set - says "Nurseryman's Exchange" on the bottom....See MoreOpinions, please! Owlface edges ever closer to the big reveal.
Comments (8)If I were you, I'd trim out the entire bump out with wood, paint it like the trim / windows and not put any tile in that space. Here's why: If I think that Equarto picture works (and I am not 100% sure I think it works), I believe it does so because the window is very simple / and a single - not a triple with multiple lights and trim in between them. You are going to have a lot of weird raw tile edges. It's going to be very tricky to get everything super straight and if ANY part of that dimensional opening is off - it'll stick out like a sore thumb with the pattern in the tile. Perhaps it's the picture - but the all tile looks wavy to me. The bottom rail / treatment on your cabinets is a tiler's nightmare too. I think tile will only draw you to all the different lines going on there....See MorePatti
