Where to buy a Dawn Redwood "Gold Rush"

Seems like everywhere on the net that has them is sold out. A local nursery has 3 of them, but they are like 7 feet tall, and for whatever reason each of them has their leader chopped off. This "leader branch" is like 1" in diameter. I have no idea why they would have done that.

to fit in an 8 foot truck???

start calling places ... with garden plants.. i have found.. that many websites require a minimum quantity in stock.. before they will list them ...

you might find a place that has one or two ...

annnddd ... based on where you are.. i can not recommend a local source ..

Is forest farm sold out? That is where I got mine. You don't want them to ship until fall though.

Horseman, your question about the growth rate is similar to what I am wondering. My tree has not added any height at all since it was planted last year. Neither does the trunk seemed to have thicken enough for me to perceive, if at all. If the late winter freeze issues had not distracted me, I would have been posting questions about the slow growth rate. Yesterday, I read on a website describing the cultivar, that the 'Gold Rush' cultivar does grow slower than the species. My 'Gold Rush' has a clean trunk about 3 feet up before the trunk forks of into two thin, flexible and arching, but still slightly branched and well leafed out trunks which makes up the canopy of the tree. It looks to me that the only reason the trunk is not branching out lower on the trunk is due to the way the grower pruned and trained the tree prior to shipping it to me. I planted mine in mid May of last year, and yes in the heat and drought of the summer the leaves did tend to want to turn brown. Whenever I saw the slightest amount of browning in the leaves, I would water the tree well, and each time, the leaves responded quickly, by changing again to their nice bright healthy color. Currently the leaves of my 'Gold Rush' look golden, and I can see some of the healthy bright green of the cultivar's normal spring leaf color trying to emerge from the base of those golden colored leaves.

Good. my new tree came by UPS ground, from greenwoodnursery.com. Delivery only took two days, but the heat most likely could have stressed the tree. It was shipped in a seven foot long box and was potted in a full sized 3 gallon pot. The soil was still moist. So I guess the heat must have stressed the leaves. They not only were more dark green, they also appeard to be less delicate than the leaves which my first tree displayed all last year. If what you say is true the difference in the new tree's bark must more so be due to the recently shipped tree being being older than the first one that nursery sent me, in spring '06. Last night when i did a search on their website by keying in the Redwood 'Ogon' identifier name that they listed on the tag, the site pulled up their 'Gold Rush' Ad and photo from which earler I had placed my orders. So, it seems like they must have sent the same tree I ordered. The redish colored bark on the new tree does make the new tree seem better than the younger first tree they sent me with more of a grayish bark color. After this morning's summer shower, the new tree's leaves do seem to look brighter compared to how they appeared when i first potted it. Along with the warm rain, it also must like the potting soil I used and the location where place the tree. It now gets morning sun and afternoon shade exposure, but it also is far enough from my house so that it does not overheat in the morning by reflective heatup, so what is commonly seen with stone walls like my house has. At first I started to plant it into a 5 gallon pot, but when I removed the rootball from it's 3 gallon pot, the roots seemed so well developed that they could handle a 10 gallon size pot, insead. Now the bottom root which were so crowded in the 3 gallon size pot, have room to spread out. Usually going larger than one pot size up concerns me about possible root rot problems. At least when I gently apread the roots out in the larger pot, they seemed to extend both down and outward enough to warrent my choice to go with the bigger pot.

Stuart, what kind of rain or water has it been getting? When mine are smaller than me a gallon or two every three days seems to keep them going. As they get bigger, just turn on the hose. On a side note, has it had any yellow foliage at all? My Ogon is pretty yellow right now but it is mostly in the sun. Oh, I see little evidence of buggers eating it. The foliage drop is almost certainly due to a lack of water. Maybe due to competition. Nice thing is these are fairly difficult to over water.

Dawn Redwoods can easily re-establish a leader so I wouldn't worry about that.

If it has nice form and decent price, I'd just buy it and plant it. I planted a 7' specimen last July that is looking pretty nice right now. It was only $89 though.

I went thru their ordering process and they're ready for my credit card and to submit an order. 10.50 for shipping to IL. A total price of 45.50.

I don't know... looks good to me.

They don't have an inventory based system. You get a follow-up confirmation as to what you're getting or not getting after your order has already shipped.

I called them to have them check as its happened several times before.

This was 2 weeks ago so it goes to show how diligent they are updating their website.

They said they likely can't get them for fall either.

They do have nice selections and decent pricing on some things though. Not the best but certainly not bad.

Call up Broken Arrow Nursery and see what they might have for fall. For all you know they may have taken the spring 1 year graft potted it up and is a nice 2 gallon plant.

your priorities are way out of whack ...

besides... i have waited up to 4 years to get a plant i want... whats your hurry???

i really dont understand why all these peeps seem to be working harder than you.. to get this plant for you ...

As usual Ken, your post makes about as much sense as trying to nail jello to a tree. I do get a kick out of your random rambling though :) Besides, you waited four years to get a tree? Eh, the best time to plant a tree and watch it grow into something remarkable in our lifetime was yesterday.. Not getting any younger!
