Planning perennial border along driveway..
Comments (9)You don't say what your driveway is composed of: gravel, concrete, asphalt? That can make a difference as to what will do well there. The last two hold and radiate a lot of heat. Do you use de-icer on your driveway that gets washed into the beds? Most perennials bloom for two to three weeks. I've found that heliopsis blooms from mid June to frost. However the shortest one I know of is Tuscan Sun which grows 15 to 18 in. 10 to 12 inches is really on the short side for perennials. Veronica 'Goodness Grows' will bloom most of the summer if you don't mind deadheading and Tunic Flower blooms from mid June till frost and is only about 3 inches tall. All of these like a fair amount of sun. Depending on whether you have high open shade or dense shade will determine if some sun lovers will tolerate that side of your driveway. I can't say for sure about the English Daisys but sometimes the bloom times given in catalogs, books and plant tags refers to the range of bloom time which can vary depending on what part of the country you live in....See MoreWhy do my orange 'ditch' lilies turn brown and ugly?
Comments (7)Mystic I appreciate the kind offer but these daylilies come back year after year and bloom nicely and I have a lot of them. I must say that they are my favorite daylily though. They look so natural here in the mountains. These daylilies bloomed nicely this year also; it's just that after they finish they always turn ugly, yellow and brown. Somebody should jump on your offer because the wild type daylilies are wonderful in my opinion....See MoreDriveway Side Future Daylily Garden - PICTURES
Comments (5)It was a lot of work. I have made more progress as the extra soil has been removed, all roots from removed shrubs dug up, and bed levelled. Now I have compost being delivered next week which I will spred out over the whole thing, especiaaly in the empty spots which are were the daylilies will go. I made the empty spots lower with the soil level so I can pile the compost on top. I had about twelve overgrown azaelas here that went over the driveway. I liked them blooming in the spring but then they don't do much for the rest of the year. So I bought four new replacement azaelas. I will plant them at the areas that have the shrubs and Joe Pye Weed that you see left in the pictures. That will still leave much room for the new daylilies and I will have my spring bloom from azaelas. Here are some new pictures of how it looks right now. It already looks better with just the soil levelled....See Moremulch bed along driveway
Comments (7)Below the tree is an area where grass will not grow well or be easy to mow. That area should be converted to groundcover, as in an island. Groundcover would be solid so eliminate the need for mulch beyond its initial planting. (A viney groundcover like Vinca minor would be good as it will grow over the roots and root itself where it contacts soil. The initial plants would be installed in pockets carved out from in between tree roots.) The rest of the area that gets enough sun, should be returned to turf. To be sure, the tree needs to have its have its lower limbs removed so as to become civilized and yard friendly. There ought to be no limbs, branches or foliage below 8' height and possibly even higher. (It depends on the tree's overall size and your house size.) I'd also remove the shrubs that hem in the path to the house entrance....See Morejeanerz
