What's the problem?

I've had this problem with my daylillies since moving to TN 5 years ago. See photos. These are in various locations around my house. The soil in one area tends to stay wet, dry in another. I was away during the last 2 weeks when the temps were in the high 90s and nothing was watered. Been watering since then. Could it be root rot? Daylily rust? I heard the cold weather here would kill the rust so it couldn't survive. Foliage just doesn't remain full and lush like I think it should. Appreciate any input.

Add gypsum, soil conditioner and compost to the heavy Tennessee clay.

Some cultivars are more susceptible to disease. Extreme temps can cause the browning of the second pic. I notice too they are near the house. Is there an overhang so they don't get rainfall? Pics one and three look fairly normal for later in the season. I would just clean out the brown foliage and keep watered. What is the name of the second cultivar?

1st photo in starting to get covered by the Falsecypress also might not be getting enough water due to the eaves. So maybe time to move. It is Ruby Spider and has been a wonderful plant in previous year with blooms and foliage. Just didn't happen this year. The second photo is Big Apple, a favorite It is not under any eaves. The area is near the house, soil has lots of clay. How do you handle clay soils? Should I dig up in the fall and "refresh" soil someway? Place elsewhere? Thanks for your advise.

FBX, I may do that. Not being cheap, I just enjoy growing from seed when possible. I think the trick with growing it from seed is you have to be cruel to be kind. Put it someplace where you forget about it and won't be tempted to water it when it starts to look dry. Treat it almost like a cactus in the early stages at least. Sometimes we are overly tempted to water things on our windowsills when the soil starts to get dry. Probably fine for most things, but it will kill small sage seedlings. Seedlings also be tempermental about just the right amount of light. Not too much or too little. At least that is what I seem to be noticing. Seedlings do seem to be tempermental in general compared to most herbs which are no brainers. Once established I'm sure they are easy & low maintenance like the rest. Most herbs are just good tasting/smelling weeds after all.

Pretty much what you see..the plant just collapses as its capillary action is shut down by the virus. There is no treating that. Just remove and plant something that is resistant. My best advice,but I don't know for sure that's what you have. When all the other Coprosma's are thriving for you..it could just be a one plant problem. Is the stem at the base girdled(eaten)?..because then the problem is the same- no water getting to the plant - only the cause is roof rats eating the bark at the base. Also- are you sure the emitter closest to that plant isn't clogged?

Shall we assume carpet used to be there? Sigh...then the thinnest possible subfloor was used to handle a relatively lightweight (and incredibly FLEXIBLE) material. The solution would have been to reinforce the subfloor = more plywood. That is assuming the subfloor was not rotten....of course that is a natural thing to check for before putting down materials...but not every installer is a genius. And yes, thin vinyl plank (4-6mm) telegraphs EVERYTHING...just like sheet vinyl. Which means vinyl REALLY needs plenty of subfloor preparation simply to get it to look good. Please talk to your installer to see if you paid for subfloor preparation. If you did, what did it include? Did the budget/quote include the need for extra sheathing?

Your lotus is fine - sometimes the coin leaves are a little weird looking. Once the plant is outside it will take off growing with normal leaves. Relax - sometimes nature isn't perfect and plants don't always grow like we expect them to. Cupped leaves no big deal. Reddish/pinkish new leaves are normal. When the temps stay above 80 degrees it will grow very fast! They are slow getting growing though. Have fun with your lotus - get it outside in the sunshine, it will be a lot happier. Here is a plant of mine growing its first coin leaves - these leaves will be completely covered over with new growth in another month.

Big Apple is notorious for having foliage problems! Nothing will correct that. Fine pinebark mulch is another thing to add to clay soils.

Thanks all for the information. Sad note on Big Apple. I've always liked the blooms and color so much. May need to move to the back instead of up front. So hard to throw-away a plant...

June, we all have those that plants that annoy us with things like Big Apple. It makes the well behaved ones more appreciated, but it is always annoying when a plant has everything it should need to do well and it persists in mis- behaving.
