Need advice on Living room re-design with antique furniture
Comments (21)Thanks for the help! The hall mirror is 9 feet tall. It came from my great grandparents house (who died before WW I) and was stashed gathering layers of coal dust in my grandparents attic for 80 years, until that house was sold 20 years ago. I got it because I was the only family member who had a ceiling tall enough for it and knew how to restore it (plus my Dad talked other family members into it!). The delicate looking settee and chairs are from the same great grandparents. I never met them nor my grandparents from my DadÂs family, so having their pieces makes me feel connected to my heritage. It was a large family so I feel very lucky to have what I do. 2 other chairs and a table are from my MomÂs family. I just learned how to post pictures this week so my stair runner has not been "featured" before. But thanks for your kind words! We replaced the wall to wall on the stairs a few years ago. We hoped the wood underneath would be decent enough to varnish but it was not. So we opted to paint with oil based and chose a wool runner that would go with all the current Persian carpets, all the rest of which are handmade wool or silk. This was just ordered from a regular carpet store and installed by them. I still want to glaze (or something) the banisters and spindles, as the builder used 1 coat of cheesy minwax on them in a dead color I donÂt like. But thatÂs a lot of surface area to cover and I donÂt know that IÂll ever get to it. I got halfway through moving furniture today before I got sidetracked. I went to the basement to get this beautiful large antique looking mirror I bought a few years ago and saved for this room when it was "ready". I wanted to see which wall it would look best on before I got too far ahead. When I unpacked it to show my husband I found the brass had corroded in spots like it was diseased. I wanted to clean it up right away so I could have his help to hang it: itÂs too heavy for one person to handle. I have this strong copper and brass cleaner that up to this point has always worked. But 6 hours later I was still cleaning it! So much for getting this room put to rights today. My feet are killing me from standing up cleaning that thing all day. Why is it that every project snowballs into something unforeseen??? Why canÂt I get anything DONE???...See MoreNeed advice to makeover my living room
Comments (14)Just some thoughts.......... I would definitely get rid of the behemoth entertainment center and get something smaller. The one you have now actually blocks part of the nice windows. You have a newer TV and don't need a big ET for it. I would just paint the end tables and coffee table maybe a matte black. They look sturdy and clean lined. When painted they would have a bit of an Asian influence and look more contemporary. Its cheaper to paint than to buy new ones. I would cover the planter and make it a ledge. I would install tiny pendant lights replacing the cam light overhead. This will help define the foyer area. Tiling the foyer area would help define it and be more functional since that area is where dirt and slush from outside land. I would paint out the backs of the book shelves. Also remove the doors on the bottom and put in some large baskets to hold your stuff. This would break up the big 'wall-o-wood' look that it has now. Use a warm color for the walls so that the wood wall blends in better. Since the paneling goes all the way to the ceiling, use a warmer white on the crown molding. Stark white is too harsh when lined up with the wood. Don't change the brick or the mantel. They go with the house. The fireplace looks very nice. Painting the screen to bring down the shininess would be better though. If you do not open and close the shutter doors and use them, I would remove them. Do you use the ceiling fan on the living room ceiling a lot? If so, you need to keep it of course but otherwise it could go. The idea to put a bar in place of the desk.......Do you NEED a bar near the foyer to offer guests a drink when they come in? If so, then it would work for your needs but I think a narrow cabinet or table would be the better choice. Consider adding a rug to anchor the furniture. Nice heavy drapes would make the room look cozy and balance things out. I would stick to solid color instead of a busy print for such a small room or use a print that is tone on tone....See MoreNeed advice on replacing my furniture/redecorating living/dining room!
Comments (15)Hey guys! so I wasnt intentionally not replying...my phone got stolen from a department store (I accedentally set it down, lol!) So I got a new phone and had forgotten my login info (I was automatically logged in) I have still been searching for inspiration. I shouldnt be, but I am still so embarrassed of my house. A lot of it is because due to indecisiveness I have not replaced the furniture I cant stand. I feel like the things I pin on pinterest or save to the ideabooks still just dont fit my living room. I feel like because of the rectangleness of the room the dining room and living room almost have to match/coordinate. It also has to match the floors and the taupe wall color since those arent going anywhere anytime soon. In the ideal world I like shiny dark furniture, especially a dining table but in my head those are all diffrent dining rooms, or open dining rooms that match the kitchen. When you walk in its BAM living and dining room. So I feel like it's just making due with the space. I'm just not really a big fan of my house layout in general, but I am embarrassed to have people over.. My husband absolutely does not want to spend a lot of money on it. We were in a place to, but when we could I couldnt make up my mind. I found this on an Instagram bloggers. Her house really resembles ours, the couch against the window wall, the open living and dining room. I like how her coffee table and dining table match each other, it looks very coordinated. And I also like the black coffee table top with the black on her TV (in the same place as ours). But she posts links to her furniture and I def cant afford that or I'd just be copying lol! I wish I could just copy someone by the book but these bloggers all have a diffrent budget than I do! Hers does have a bit of a farmhouse vibe, but I like it because it is modern. I also like the dining table because it is not cloth chairs and with kids that doesnt always end the best! The style though farmhouse is very popular right now and modernized, from what I can tell. I like walking into target and seeing the target style. I know its modern and popular. I just want to make sure the dining room matches the living room. But I'm in a play or safe kind of vibe. Rooms to go and ashley is more in our budget, cheaper furniture sets and financing options. I like the ones at world market, wayfair etc. but they can be pricey and no financing.. Comments (118)We lived in Ukla (I may be spelling it wrong) but it was a little town outside Brussels. We didn't want to live in Waterloo where most x-pats live because we wanted to improve our French and we loved that little area. We spent Sat morning walking to the little shops for first Chocolat!! Then breads, then flowers, then meats, etc. etc. It was glorious! Looking forward to seeing more pictures!...See Moretvq1
